FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM 2016-17 TIPS
FPL GW38 Review
GW38: 92PTS! (AVG: 58PTS). Team Value: £107.4m! A wild end to the Fantasy Premier League season! Did we make it into the top 100k?
Upper 90 Studios Overall Rank 127,930 to 119,767! Top 2.6% out of 4.5 million! 🙂
Finish line.
Our highest Overall Rank this season! But the real accomplishment was doing something we were afraid others wouldn’t agree with. Back in January, as we drowned around 1.28 million in the overall rank, we decided to make drastic changes not only to the team using the Wildcard, but in our approach to the game itself. Muting noisy FPL accounts on social media and having the freedom to choose when to share our full team on the blog released all our Fantasy constraints. This type of test is far more difficult than an FPL rank.
⚽️ Don’t fear other people’s judgement of you, especially if you failed to achieve your personal goals. Failure is just a road bump. Accept the setbacks and start fresh with more knowledge.
The Good.
Harry Kane (34PTS, captain). GOLDEN BOOT! How do you follow a four-goal performance? Hat-trick! Despite selling Diego Costa (4PTS) who registered an assist, our replacement Harry Kane rewarded us with another phenomenal return. Three goals and maximum points for our captain! ⚽⚽⚽ Spurs finished the season with a bang, smashing in 13 goals against Leicester and Hull, but it wasn’t easy for Kane. He deserves full praise for finishing as top scorer after missing eight games through injury. 💪
⚽️ Kane has now scored 71 goals in his last 91 Premier League games for Spurs.

Gabriel Jesus (11PTS). After watching the players we sold put up big numbers last week, we needed them to deliver on the final day. Jesus came through with another goal and an assist, eleven points in back to back games. His teammate Kevin De Bruyne (9PTS) and rival Mesut Ozil (5PTS) contributed a few assists which we are thankful for. Will Jesus lead Manchester City to the title next year?
⚽️ Jesus has never blanked for Man City, scoring 7 goals and 4 assists in 7 games.

Philippe Coutinho (10PTS). GOLAÇO! Another nervous game to watch as Liverpool battled for Champions League football. All that is needed from Coutinho is one moment of magic and he provided it, whipping in a brilliant free kick that earned him two bonus points! Is Barcelona in his future?
⚽️ Coutinho has scored 15 Premier League goals from outside the box, the most since 2012/13.

Other Standouts: Willy Caballero (6PTS), Kevin De Bruyne (9PTS), Alexis Sanchez (9PTS)
The Bad.
Josh King (injured). A Team Value of £107.4m allowed us to wait until closer to deadline before making our planned transfers – Coutinho and Kane. With only minutes to go, we refreshed all the social media accounts and clicked “confirm.”
Another refresh and bang! Josh King (0PTS) posted on his Instagram account that he would miss the final game with injury! 😡
We quickly moved in for Wilfried Zaha (2PTS) for a few reasons:
- Mourinho said he would field a team with kids
- Zaha had extra motivation against his old club
- Crystal Palace’s final league position affects prize money
Another reason for taking a late risk was our bench. Barnes didn’t start and Everton defenders faced Arsenal on the final day, losing 3-1. Our emergency transfer didn’t work out as Zaha blanked. 🙁

Fantasy Premier League 2016/17
Total Points: 2,159
Overall Rank: 119,767
Highest Rank: 119,767
Highest Team Value: £107.7m
Total Transfers: 67
Just missed out on top 100k overall, but we pushed hard until the end. After struggling at 1.28 million overall in January, we fought back to a top 2.6% finish out of 4.5 million. This season has been the toughest yet. When we can’t trust form, it’s more difficult to make accurate predictions. But we admit our mistakes and move on. Looking forward to 2017/18!
We’d love to hear about your season below. 👍
Thank You!
Thank you everyone for your support! This season has been difficult, but your inspirational words have been a big lift. We’ve met great friends and can’t wait to have you all back next season! Please stay in touch! Thanks!!! 🙂

Fantasy Premier League strategy.
For the past 9 years, our team has finished in the top 1-2% of all players. 2014-15 was our best finish ever: Overall rank 13,126, top 0.4%. Our strategy is risky. We start slow and build team value by making 1-3 transfers each week. We save on goalkeepers and defenders and load up with expensive midfielders and forwards. By January, we can stack the full team with the most valuable players and come from behind to pull into the top 1-2% of all managers. See our previous finishes HERE.
Stay ahead of your competitors! Don’t forget to subscribe to our email list at the top right of the page. We’ll send you our weekly team prediction and best tips which you can use to tweak your team. Stay up-to-date with our last-minute transfers and captain choice on Twitter or Facebook.

Hi Bruno
Congrats on how you finished the season! I know it’s been tough season at times but the way you handled the tough times showed your character!
I had a season that I never could have dreamed of!
17965 OR
2278 points
and I achieved my target of breaking into the top 10 of your U90 mini league @ no.9! 🙂
So good to see my name UP there 🙂
Won my mini leagues, trophy and some cash, as well as my work league 3 years in a row!
Once again, thanks Bruno for your awesome insight and most importantly, tactical coaching that’s helped me and others find success!
Can’t wait for next season.
Cheers!

Hi. Appreciate that, thanks. It wasn’t easy, so I’ll take 15 green arrows out of the last 20 as a consolation prize.
Top-10 in U90 mini-league is the best! Well done! 🙂 Those are impressive stats, 17k OR! Plus crushing your cash leagues and bragging rights in your work league 3 years in a row. 👏
Appreciate the nice words which makes the effort with the blog worth it.
See you next season!

Hi Bruno,
Congratulations on your achievement, very consistent for 10 years.
This is my first year in fantasy EPL with more than 2100 pts, 228k rank and 108,5 team value.
I’m happy with that and want to improve next year, especially I think I take too many hits this year (more that 70 transfer).
Thank you for your articles, suggestion and reply of my comments, looking forwars for next season.

Hi. Thanks! 228k overall and £108.5m are impressive numbers for your first season. Congrats! 👍
Yes, we always aim for transfer replacements that can make up the additional hits. Otherwise, we would be starting every week in the negative!
But this season was one of the toughest with transfers and Team Value as the core of our team didn’t deliver consistently, and bandwagons let us down too often. Plus injuries!
Good luck improving on the rank and thanks for the positive words. See you next season!

Congrats Bruno,
This year has been tough, & as they say when going the going gets tough…..
You id it.
I came close to canning it, and also changed my strategy. Doing less Sat afternoon substitutions and slower more considered ones. My TV barely moved after Gw20.
However my OR did drop from 1mn+ to 220k.
The biggest shock to me was my partners team. After I set it up I was told no transfers would be done unless a player was out or dropped! 13 transfers went unused (AARGH),
TV crept slightly up 102; but…yes it finished at 45K (!!!!)
Im still convinced that with your blogs help (like following Kane(C) ) and more transfers it could have finished even higher. Still I think the key take away I got was that WC was used gw6 when teams had settled a bit and the stats for players were getting accurate. When a change did come it was a swap done for the season rather than next gw. So I got very little pan flash clogging up the team, no Capoue,Allen,Gray, & the like.
So I’m thinking next year to try & merge the two approaches. do transfers , take hits, but not for next gw, minimum 6+gw and on solid stats. & keep my finger off the WC till gw6

Thanks! It was the most difficult season in 10 years playing. There was a 2-3 GW period where every transfer I made came off injured before halftime! All for hits as well.
Fighting back from 1m to 45k is unbelievable! Awesome to hear, congrats. 👍
Know what you mean with being more conservative with transfers. Had to make an adjustment also. You’re right to be careful risking everything on the very next GW with transfers. We can look a bit more long term so we don’t “chase points.” Nothing worse than selling a player soon after bringing him, then he scores.
Sounds like you have a solid plan set for next season. I’m not the best with being patient with the Wildcard. Like a kid with the big red button!
Thanks for the comment.

Nothingham Phantoms
27/05/17
Hi Bruno,
My season 2016-17 characterized as follows:
Timeline:
4 seasons of progression: 421k, 299k, 170k, 65k.
Intention to 5th: avoid losing too many points in first fase.
Turn-out:
– ‘Debacle’ in GW2, already (a.o. Mhki>Mane-Mane>injured), tone set? . . .
– Struggling in the millionaires until about GW11.
– Team mainly carried bij Lukaku(cap), and – precariously – Kun.
– Big disappointments about ManCity i.g. + Aguero’s red card among it:
changed teamname from “RedHotCityPeppers” to “Nothingham Phantoms”,
– Turning Kun into Kane mainly ‘feeding’ ‘Debacle’:
Kane proceeding to blank in 4 consecutive GW’s!
– In 2 of those GW’s ‘now-known-Big Harry’ also was my blanking-captain,
we live in the mid of December.
– Firmly residing in the 2-millionairs-club by than: 2,8m in GW17.
– GW18 I finally allowed Siggy ‘the armband’, turned out Ibra would have deserved it.
– 2017 made it’s entrance with a mere blanking WC-team in GW20, but . . . wait . . .
the outlays of improvement became ‘visible’ :)!
– After another firm ‘knock’ at the end of that month, GW23, (25-4=21points)
I gradually regained the reins!
– 7 weeks of “Green Arrows” saw a rise up the charts from 2,6m to 1,3m,
the good hopes were back!
– Alas though: GW29’s early-Kane-in-transfer turned out to be very ‘injurious’ and
GW30 saw Seamus Coleman take his horrid tackle.
– From GW29 I started directing transfers towards the upcoming DGW’s,
to begin with DGW34: I counted on MU first.
– And . . . there was ‘Debacle’ showing up his nasty nose again:
injuries for Ibra AND Rojo, Rashford rested, Mou turning to EL!
– GW35 I was back down to 1,7m, a decline only tempered by Eriksen/ Kane,
who fulfilled their captaincies to satisfaction.
– However: due to my cautious DGW36, 37planning I was able to make a huge OR-climb in the last 3 GW’s: with an overhaul of 900k places I managed to rocket my team out of the millionaires after all!!! End result 800kOR, nowhere near my first start and far off my previous, but a ‘consolation goal’ in a very tricky season!
2016-17 in general:
– too many failing cap’s, among them all the ‘big names’ . . . (except Romelu)
– too eager on ’unknown’ players, like Mhki, Musa, . . ., at the start of the season,
– too often too early with transfers: have brought in too many ‘injured’ players,
– this means to be more careful with the well-known ‘price-effect-transfer-policy”:
– TV was of some help in the end, but being outclassed by very ‘budget’ outfits.
– ’Transfering-with-hits’ I lost 136 points, an average of nearly a “-4” every week,
this could be reasonable.
– DGW-planning was alright, but probably have lost points in the run-in to them:
DGW-players were not ‘on fire when hired’!
– I too read an amount of ‘commentary’, but – yes indeed, U90 –
it can distract disastrous from ‘your own gut’.
Conclusion:
– The game has changed, influences have multiplied, contenders aggregated.
– This season will be archived for me as “educational’.
– Next season is only a few month away, I’m starting it now!
On the blog:
With this blog you’ve hit a very versatile outlet and platform of exchange!
Many of us FPL’ers are simply helped, not only by asking and getting some advice, but also by just being able to spread some thought.
I read some, but not all, and keep admiring the friendly way in which you keep adequately unfolding your analyses.
Congrats on this and your OR, have a fine summer, keep up the good work.
I’ll be back for a new challenge in 2017-18.
Cheers,
Wouter

Hi. Great reading your season review. So many nasty surprises! Still, it was a valiant effort to escape the millionaires club late on, climbing 900k places in 3GWs. 👍
2016-17.
Agree with your bullet points. Players like Mhki and Musa are harder to invest in early on because they’re unproven in the league. We typically start with players we trust and a gamble or two.
Premium players failed to deliver consistently, while budget options hurt those who didn’t make the tactical switch. The problem is budget options weren’t consistent either, so it became about having the top 1-2 players who delivered big each week. Experienced managers might’ve been affected more than others as they trusted proven strategies. It took until the end of the season for those tactics to work, so we have to be flexible and adapt.
DGWs can be disappointing. It’s about investing in teams and players you feel will deliver. Some DGWs, we stick to a strong team core and take a few gambles. Other times, we go all-in.
Distractions were probably my biggest mistake this season. Seeing negative or confusing posts takes away focus and the mental part of the game. It’s hard to pull out transfers from our instinct when there is too much noise. A confused mind takes no action, but this season it was the wrong action! 👍
Conclusions.
The playing field is stronger with hand-fed, quality tips straight from FPL itself. We have to dig out new advantages to have an edge again.
U90 blog.
It’s amazing to have so many share their thoughts here every week. Edging toward 10,000 comments in two full seasons!
Working on new ideas for FPL this summer, and can’t wait to have you back in 2017-18! Thanks for the great comment.

Coming to this a bit late but thanks for your comments and advice over the season. It was, at times, invaluable. Also reassuring to know that others were finding this year tough too.
My season was pretty dire for a while and was saved only in the last few weeks, not least by triple-captaining Sanchez in the DGW which helped me achieve 178pts!
Final result:
Overall points 2,165
Overall rank 110,238

Hi Bruno, it’s been a while, have been offline for sometime now due to my company’s field work. This season have been absolutely brilliant and also your blog. Your detailed knowledge for the game always speaks for itself and what a great platform you got here, that’s for helping me in understanding the game more better even though this my first season in FPL, I have really enjoyed it though it have been a season of many ups and downs, good and bad, anxiety, joy and some times pain and even regret, but we move on. We learn everyday in life no matter what. Let’s see as things going to be as we follow the pre season games. Let me console myself with NBAFINALS as we wait for a great season ahead.

Hi. Glad to have you back, always happy to exchange ideas on FPL. You’re spot on with how this season turned out – good, bad, joy and sometimes regret, but we learn from the mistakes.
Fantastic Overall Rank 92k and Team Value! More impressive given it was your first season. High bar you’ve set for your second attempt, but with more knowledge and experience you should top it. 👍
The NBA Finals and pre-season friendlies help over the summer break. Missing FPL already! Appreciate the compliments and can’t wait for 2017-18 season. 👍
