FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM 2016-17 TIPS
FPL GW38 Review
GW38: 92PTS! (AVG: 58PTS). Team Value: £107.4m! A wild end to the Fantasy Premier League season! Did we make it into the top 100k?
Upper 90 Studios Overall Rank 127,930 to 119,767! Top 2.6% out of 4.5 million! 🙂
Finish line.
Our highest Overall Rank this season! But the real accomplishment was doing something we were afraid others wouldn’t agree with. Back in January, as we drowned around 1.28 million in the overall rank, we decided to make drastic changes not only to the team using the Wildcard, but in our approach to the game itself. Muting noisy FPL accounts on social media and having the freedom to choose when to share our full team on the blog released all our Fantasy constraints. This type of test is far more difficult than an FPL rank.
⚽️ Don’t fear other people’s judgement of you, especially if you failed to achieve your personal goals. Failure is just a road bump. Accept the setbacks and start fresh with more knowledge.
The Good.
Harry Kane (34PTS, captain). GOLDEN BOOT! How do you follow a four-goal performance? Hat-trick! Despite selling Diego Costa (4PTS) who registered an assist, our replacement Harry Kane rewarded us with another phenomenal return. Three goals and maximum points for our captain! ⚽⚽⚽ Spurs finished the season with a bang, smashing in 13 goals against Leicester and Hull, but it wasn’t easy for Kane. He deserves full praise for finishing as top scorer after missing eight games through injury. 💪
⚽️ Kane has now scored 71 goals in his last 91 Premier League games for Spurs.

Gabriel Jesus (11PTS). After watching the players we sold put up big numbers last week, we needed them to deliver on the final day. Jesus came through with another goal and an assist, eleven points in back to back games. His teammate Kevin De Bruyne (9PTS) and rival Mesut Ozil (5PTS) contributed a few assists which we are thankful for. Will Jesus lead Manchester City to the title next year?
⚽️ Jesus has never blanked for Man City, scoring 7 goals and 4 assists in 7 games.

Philippe Coutinho (10PTS). GOLAÇO! Another nervous game to watch as Liverpool battled for Champions League football. All that is needed from Coutinho is one moment of magic and he provided it, whipping in a brilliant free kick that earned him two bonus points! Is Barcelona in his future?
⚽️ Coutinho has scored 15 Premier League goals from outside the box, the most since 2012/13.

Other Standouts: Willy Caballero (6PTS), Kevin De Bruyne (9PTS), Alexis Sanchez (9PTS)
The Bad.
Josh King (injured). A Team Value of £107.4m allowed us to wait until closer to deadline before making our planned transfers – Coutinho and Kane. With only minutes to go, we refreshed all the social media accounts and clicked “confirm.”
Another refresh and bang! Josh King (0PTS) posted on his Instagram account that he would miss the final game with injury! 😡
We quickly moved in for Wilfried Zaha (2PTS) for a few reasons:
- Mourinho said he would field a team with kids
- Zaha had extra motivation against his old club
- Crystal Palace’s final league position affects prize money
Another reason for taking a late risk was our bench. Barnes didn’t start and Everton defenders faced Arsenal on the final day, losing 3-1. Our emergency transfer didn’t work out as Zaha blanked. 🙁

Just missed out on top 100k overall, but we pushed hard until the end. After struggling at 1.28 million overall in January, we fought back to a top 2.6% finish out of 4.5 million. This season has been the toughest yet. When we can’t trust form, it’s more difficult to make accurate predictions. But we admit our mistakes and move on. Looking forward to 2017/18!
We’d love to hear about your season below. 👍
Thank You!
Thank you everyone for your support! This season has been difficult, but your inspirational words have been a big lift. We’ve met great friends and can’t wait to have you all back next season! Please stay in touch! Thanks!!! 🙂

Fantasy Premier League strategy.
For the past 9 years, our team has finished in the top 1-2% of all players. 2014-15 was our best finish ever: Overall rank 13,126, top 0.4%. Our strategy is risky. We start slow and build team value by making 1-3 transfers each week. We save on goalkeepers and defenders and load up with expensive midfielders and forwards. By January, we can stack the full team with the most valuable players and come from behind to pull into the top 1-2% of all managers. See our previous finishes HERE.
Stay ahead of your competitors! Don’t forget to subscribe to our email list at the top right of the page. We’ll send you our weekly team prediction and best tips which you can use to tweak your team. Stay up-to-date with our last-minute transfers and captain choice on Twitter or Facebook.

HI Bruno, i got 107 points total of 630 as i started late.
I just want to thank you for all your guidance and help you have given me from thshort while i was here. Have a great rest from all the questions until next season. Looking forward to next season as it will be my first time being part from the beginning of a season.
Just a request if possible? Is it possible that i could join the U90 mini league OR is it only that guys that are there or certain people? Not a big deal i would just like tot be part of you guys if it’s possible.
And well done to all the other guys!! Let’s nail it next season.
Thanks.

Hi. 107pts is a monster! That’s a good score for a Double Gameweek, much less a single.
Now the work begins hopefully covering top matches here in the U.S. this summer. The top leagues end, then it starts overseas with friendly tournaments that are growing in significance every year.
To join U90 mini-league, we’ll post a link with a code at the start of next season. Anyone can join for free, just keep an eye out for next season’s U90 league code and enter before GW1. This was our first time running a ML, so we’re still learning. We closed it to new entries after the season began. Doesn’t seem right for someone with a high Overall Rank to join late in the season and “steal” the prize. Some who are there from the start are regulars on the blog and should be rewarded.
If you’ve joined our email list, you should also get a notification about the mini-league. We only send you an email to notify you of the latest post, including the mini-league code. We use a safe email service called AWeber.
Appreciate the nice words, and see you next season! 👍

Hi Bruno
Firstly, l would like to say a big thank you for your level headed approach and expertise, it can’t be easy with all of us firing a million questions at you every week, but your advice over the season has been invaluable and l couldn’t have
achieved my final position without your help and trusting my gut!!
Final scores on the doors;
Total Points: 2,307
Overall Rank: 9,900
Highest Rank: 5,657
Highest Team Value: £106.1
Total Transfers: 56
I had to make an early call on Friday due to family commitments which wasn’t ideal and l brought in King who didn’t play and Coutinho as Captain, then Harry continued to score for fun!!
Overall and considering how the season has gone l am pretty pleased to have finished in the top 10k for the 2nd year in a row, but a little frustrated that l didn’t finish higher, but there’s always next season!!
It was unlucky that you finished just outside the 100k, but considering where you were at Christmas you have to be pleased with an amazing effort for the run in!
Finally, l hope you keep the blog going and do let me know about your mini-league for next season and to you and everyone who contributes to the Upper 90’s have a wonderful summer :-).
Take care and all the best

Hi. Great to hear that, thanks! The blog does take some effort and that’s not counting messages on Facebook. Not a bad problem to have, it could be the other way around with no action.
Nice moves! Highest Rank at 5,657 is impressive, but Overall Rank inside 10k is shockingly good! Plus it’s your 2nd consecutive finish in the top 10k which makes it even better! Congrats. 👍
Know what you mean with family commitments, same here as well. Josh King was a blow as it turned into a negative return on my end with the extra hit. Coutinho did well and Kane was a beast. As someone said below, it was like playing FIFA with Spurs and Kane in the last few games.
Yes, it was a bit of a blow to the ego not finishing in the top 100k, but you’re right about the improvement from Xmas and finishing on a high with room for improvement next season. 👍
Always open to new ideas, but the blog should be back without a hitch. The U90 mini-league code will be posted clearly next season. Want to get more creative with the prizes, but it’s tough with so many people from all parts of the world.
Appreciate all your tips. Have a great summer and see you in a few months!

Thank you so much. I’m a novice but wanted to try and keep up with the blokes in the office and I came 3rd overall (out of around 20 of them) so I was very happy and I annoyed them as I know nothing about footie but I love the stats!
Anyway I only started reading your blogs a couple of months ago but got some valuable
I got 2052 points and ranked 387,797th overall and 156,422nd in England so I’m happy with that. I listened to you and got Kane and Coutinho instead of Hazard & Lukaku and played Kane as captain so I got 88 points this GW.
Thank you and roll on August! 🙂

You’re welcome! 3rd overall in your league is impressive especially as you’re getting started. But now you have a card up your sleeve exchanging ideas on U90. Don’t tell anyone in the office and maybe you can make them cry next season. 🙂
Always good to hear that you got something from it, but didn’t expect such a strong OR 387k! We would’ve taken that around January in a heartbeat. 156k in England is fantastic. 👍
Glad the transfers worked out. Interesting that both Hazard and Lukaku scored this week, but Coutinho and Kane captain smashed it. 88pts!
Looking forward to hearing from you in a few months. Appreciate the positive comment.

Hey guys
Thanks for yet another season of advice.
Finished 206615 with 2114 pts,
Would have loved to make top 200k but not complaining considering I was 1.3m in gw25 before 14 consecutive green arrows.
Enjoy your summer
See you in August

22/05/17
Hey. No problem, glad to exchange ideas and share our thoughts. 👍
Exactly! Going from 1.3m in GW25 to nearly nearly 200k overall with 14 green arrows is a win. Well done.
This season was brutal with how unpredictable it was. There will be top Fantasy managers with ranks in the >500k who will be hurt by how things went. It’s a blow to the ego, but not a reflection on their skills. We think of next season as starting fresh with new information.
Have a great summer and see you in August.

Hi, you’ve made a great comeback with your score ! 🙂
GW 38 was a strong finish for me – 111pts pushing my team almost inside those sweet 10k.
At the start of the season I hoped to be in top 500k so as you can image I am very happy by the overal score as it was my first season with FPL. Went from 2,840,280 at GW1 to 12,498 GW 38. Most important GW’s for me were GW13 when I captained sanchez and pushed inside top 500k, and GW 28 where captain King pushed me into top 50k. It gave me a lot of excitment to participate in FPL, and of course I want to beat my score next season 🙂
Total Points: 2,296
Overall Rank: 12,498
Highest Rank: 12,498
Highest Team Value: £108.9
Total Transfers: 50
Cheers,

Hi. Thanks! Excellent finish for you with 111pts and nearly into the top 10k! Even better as it was your first season which shows great instinct.
Good to see your key moments and final stats including a strong Team Value!
Target of 500k completely smashed and now you have a new one for next season to beat 12k! 🙂

I want to say thank you Bruno for this fantastic blog and your dedication with us.
This is my first time playing FPL and I did a lot research on internet to how to play the game before entering, some sites gave me some ideas but your blog was the best one. Finish between 1%-2% rank overall and share with our “enemies” most your ideas you got my respect.
For my first season I end up:
Overall points: 2,314
Overall rank: 8,491
Squad value:105,5
and 59 transfers.
My last team:(AOT)
Caballero
Alonso, Davies
Coutinho, Zaha, Sane, Pedro, Sanchez
Costa, Kane, Jesus
102 points and I took -8points
So one more time thanks to you, to upper 90 studios community, thanks to Allen, Phillips, Alonso and Heaton to make my team better than others team and I hope next year we all finish 10k overall.
Take care my friend.

No problem. Glad to exchange ideas and I appreciate the compliments on the blog.
What a finish for you with 102pts GW38 and Overall Rank 8,491! That’s incredible. 👍 Sounds like you made smart investments on the right players at the right time.
It feels good to hear about the U90 community doing well even if I didn’t quite reach my personal goals this season. That’s like a mini-win.
Take care, and hope you finish even stronger next season!

Hi Bruno
Firstly what a great ending to the 2016/2017 season & well done to you for your change in fortune, after a testing period and with all your efforts, advice and time spent to respond to so many blog comments. It is truly appreciated by all here, I assure you.
This has been an insightful season with many speed bumps, but ending with a flourish- GW 38 had 96 points (after 186 prior DGW37) and quite happy with OR of 171k- this is 1m places higher than my first season last year and surpasses all my expectations. Ended my mini league in 3rd, after being close to last at one stage.
I have a new motto in FPL.-to quote the legendary Nelson Mandela ” In FPL I never lose. I either Win or I Learn”. Ok, yes I added the FPL bit but the rest is credited to him.
And there were lots of learnings this year, making me all the wiser hopefully.
I focussed this season a lot on team value from the start- probably a little too much, I learnt towards the end from you, to at times, to rather forfeit price change, if one needs to be certain of transfer, injuries etc….will need to re-strategise this for next year.
Another learning is to evaluate each week in 2/3 week batches and not to expect every week to have a huge score or above average. Some weeks goals are just going to dry up or top players miss out or it might just be my turn to get a low score.
Its how you learn from it that matters….as Mandela so famously said and lived by.
Once again, well done. Hope you have a awesome break and come back next season stronger, with even more insightful valuable feedback.
PS: It would be great, if there was way to have an email alert when there are response(s) to a comment posted, with a link, thus bloggers don’t need to keep on checking when a response is posted.
I love the EDM song- perhaps the EPL might notice this and play it at matches next year!.
Cheers.

Hi. It was a tough season, so that’s awesome to hear the nice words, thank you.
186pts followed by 96pts is the best way to end the season. OR of 171k is more than respectable with the way this season has gone. Well done smashing your previous best by a wide margin.
Great quote, “In FPL I never lose. I either win, or I learn.” Experience is an advantage as you start to gain a feel for which type of players to invest in and which to avoid. Plus when to use certain “cheats” at the right times. Just knowing some of these techniques exist is an advantage.
You’re right to point out Team Value strategy because it was less effective this season. A strong team value is a reflection of picking in-form players, but players rarely stayed in-form long enough to profit! The worst culprits were the core of our team – players like Ozil and De Bruyne are ones we can typically count on to deliver a strong baseline score, plus they beef up Team Value. That didn’t happen this year, so we were left to feed on bandwagons we didn’t trust. Then they didn’t deliver for long enough to cash out on a profit. It was the perfect storm!
Thanks for the feedback on the comments section. Always looking to improve it. Just uploading a team image directly would be a massive help to save time. Instead, this system only allows posting a link to an image, which most people won’t bother with. Can’t blame them! Some commenting solutions bog down the website with bloated code, so it’s always trying to find the right balance of features and stability. Email alerts and a better replying system to encourage more engagement between commenters would be awesome upgrades.
That’s funny with the EDM song. Have some extra time now to finish up a bunch of ideas. You never know. 👍
Have a great summer and can’t wait to come back. We both left room for improvement next season! Thanks for the great comment.

Hey Bruno
Congrats to u for another gr8 season.thanks to u and all your expert tips and mainly ur advice to always trust ur gut ,I finished 77 k OR in another difficult year.we all thought last year was crazy;).
Also finished 3 rd in my ml with a prize . jumped from 220k to 77 k in the last 2 gws which just shows never give up in FPL or in life.
Cheers rock on .
Just Realised what will we do now for the next 2 months.waiting for the next year to begin

Hey. Thanks! It is about trusting your instinct. FPL accounts including U90 are helpful if you’re completely stuck on a decision. It can help to see a different point of view, or to check if you’ve missed something after you already have a plan in mind. But you can also disagree with advice posted here and be right.
77k OR is fantastic! Especially with such a jump in the final GWs. Congrats! Finishing 3rd in your ML with a prize is a nice boost as well. 👍
I’m sure many top managers gave up this season, but you proved that it’s possible to turn things around if we hang in there.
What to do for 2 months? Sadly I might have to be pitch-side to cover Man United vs. Barcelona. 🙂 Seriously though, I’ll be grateful if U90 can cover friendly tournaments here in the US. We might catch summer transfers before anyone else and get a head start on the FPL season. Last year we noticed an out-of-shape Diego Costa, Hazard and Chelsea teammates getting battered by a second-string NY Red Bulls. We shared that on our blog, and we know how their season turned out.
Of course friendlies aren’t the best gauge to predict how a season will turn out, but they are becoming more significant every year with the money involved. It’s never a friendly between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Can’t wait for 2017/18 FPL season!

Hi Bruno,
Congrats for the way you ended the season. And thank you for your amazing blog.
I ended up with 2296pts. 12,607 OR. 106.8 TV. 4th in U90. 3rd in my country. And won my other two mini leagues. It’s my 2nd season playing fpl and I can’t be happier. Read every single one of your posts since the start of last season. You’re my mentor 🙂 Thanks again for all your help. Have a wonderful summer!

Hi. Thanks! This is amazing. Didn’t expect so many high finishes here.
Nearly 2300pts is unbelievable with 12k OR and 3rd in your country! Strong TV as well. Congrats on the 4th place finish in U90 mini-league! It’s not easy. 🙂
Wow, can’t believe you read all the blog posts! So happy to hear that.
You even crushed it in your other mini-leagues. Have a great summer and thanks for the update!
