FPL GW35+ Provisional Team

Fantasy Strategy.

Fantasy StrategyTwo late changes cost my team a valuable 12 points. With less than an hour before deadline, I switched the captaincy from Fernandes to De Bruyne and benched Greenwood for Jimenez. Why?

Instead of digging through stats, I’m going deeper into my emotional state at that decision-making moment.

This paragraph is the briefest explanation of my decision-making process in Fantasy. I watch games and take mental or written notes. I can also take in games without actively thinking about FPL. I want the process to be instinctive. 90% of my transfer plan and strategy is set at the final whistle of the last game. I set the captaincy and starting lineup with confidence early on, then I stay open-minded as I gather new information on injuries, rotation and other factors. I’m cautious of being too open-minded! That includes making changes that go against my original ideas.

When the season restarted, I made a pact to myself to select players I was excited to watch. Ownership stats are important, but I want to enjoy the game as much as possible before it’s ruined with drinks breaks on chilly nights, and ten subs per game, and fake crowd noise like a drone digging into my brain.

And VAR.

So I sold Mane and Traore for De Bruyne and Pulisic. Then I tightened up the team depth by shifting Connolly out for Greenwood. I was more excited to watch the new players.

Even when the initial results were less than optimal, especially when taking a transfer hit, I calculated the players’ points potential over a number of Gameweeks.

These are the post Wildcard results of a -4 hit after just two Gameweeks:

Old players. Mane 11+0 = 11, Traore 2+3 = 5
New players. KDB 1+7 = 8, Pulisic 6+9 = 15 (-4 hit)

Mane+Traore = 16
KDB+Pulisic = 23 (-4) = 19

The ‘transfers out’ returned 16 points compared to 19 for the ‘transfers in.’ Or 16 to 26 if we count double captain points for KDB this round.

Investing on exciting players worked. So why did I bench Greenwood, one of two late changes that cost my team 9 points?

I made key decisions from an emotional state of desperation. Time was running out.

stopwatch icon 150x150My priorities:

  • Finalizing my team
  • Setting Daily Fantasy
  • Creating FPL content
  • Making music
  • Going for a daily walk
  • Spending time with my family

I was juggling multiple priorities within a 24 hour deadline and ended up out of sync. My mistake was spending too much time finalizing my FPL team. It was already set instinctively.

At the completion of GW34+, I felt confident in the plan for GW35+. It took just a few minutes to come up with a strategy, albeit after watching hours of games.

Now it’s time to experiment.

GW35+ Transfers

Transfers: 2 (-4 hit)

Transfers OUT: Son, Rashford ❌
Transfers IN: Martial, Vardy (c) âś…

Heung-Min Son (1PT).

Benched by Mourinho. I was so excited to watch Son play against Bournemouth! Despite his introduction at halftime, Son was unable to make a significant impact in the game. My concern is not Tottenham’s ability, it’s their motivation and determination in the season run-in.

⚽️ Spurs failed to register a single shot on target against the Cherries.

TOT ATTACKERS FIXTURES GW33-GW38

Marcus Rashford (2PTS).

He’s been unlucky not to score more points since the restart. Solskjaer must’ve felt the same way when he gave Rashford the full 90 minutes against Villa while others were rested. It wasn’t his day, but don’t be discouraged if you’re keeping him in your team. His scoring potential remains a positive.

Anthony Martial (6PTS).

manchester united

Martial provided the assist to Greenwood and smashed one against the crossbar. Like Rashford, he is scoring below his potential in Fantasy. But there are other reasons why I swapped United “forwards.”

1. Martial and Greenwood are the focal points in United’s attack. Bruno Fernandes was talking to Martial during the game to coordinate their movements.

2. Rashford has a supporting role on the wing, Martial is more direct down the center. Rashford was only able to sneak in behind the defense after Martial and Greenwood were off the pitch.

3. Martial was angry at being subbed off for a rest. He’s enjoying himself with Fernandes, Pogba, Greenwood, and Rashford. His desire to score is evident. Who will finish as the team’s top scorer?

⚽️ Martial and Rashford are tied on 20 goals and 7 assists this season.

Jamie Vardy (9PTS).

Hat-tricks and red cards. Vardy is an explosive player who plays right on the edge. To captain him is a huge risk, but my team is struggling to make big leaps in the Overall Rank. I want to take a chance.

One positive is his form. Vardy is averaging 11 points in his last two games. Another is the recovery time. Leicester played against 10-men Arsenal on Tuesday while Bournemouth played 112 minutes against Spurs on Thursday. Bournemouth defenders have just two days of recovery and preparation before the match on Sunday.

The Cherries are also fighting relegation. Against Spurs, they weren’t afraid to attack and go for the three points. They also left gaps in behind, but Lamela and Moura dribbled at defenders instead of exploiting the space behind.

With Maddison injured, Leicester retain less possession. As their opponents get comfortable on the ball, the Foxes are more direct with Vardy as the target on the counter.

⚽️ Vardy is leading the Golden Boot race with 22 goals.

FPL GW34+ Review

Let’s break down player performances top to bottom.

Nick Pope (8PTS), Charlie Taylor (11PTS).

Burnley were solid defensively without captain Ben Mee and didn’t deserve to concede a late goal against Sheffield United. They fought even harder against West Ham this week and I’m grateful for a double clean sheet. A combined 19 points from the cheapest players in the starting eleven. The only concern is Liverpool next. Play it safe with Lascelles, or one more roll of the dice?

Christian Pulisic (9PTS).

WHAT A GOAL! Another run inside the box, quick switch from his right to his left foot, and bang. No chance for the keeper. Pulisic has yet to blank since the restart. That’s now three goals and three assists in five Premier League games. I want to see more of Pulisic and Willian running at defenders.

Bruno Fernandes (14PTS).

Never a penalty. Fernandes steps on the Villa defender and falls over holding his ankle. Not that I’m complaining! 14 points is massive for my team. Despite his high ownership with #Elite64 managers, Fernandes is owned by less than 30% overall. Although many teams could be inactive by now.

Kevin De Bruyne (7PTS).

He was excellent against Newcastle and deserved more. David Silva hurt De Bruyne in Fantasy, taking over a free kick and scoring, then missing at least two easy chances from KDB. Not bitter at all! 🙂

On a serious note, De Bruyne took a knock near the end after a hospital pass from Sterling. He seemed ok to continue, but it was worrying to see him down injured. Every factor counts, and I may not consider KDB for the captaincy this round. Another factor is City’s opponent. Brighton are playing with confidence and deserved to score more goals against Liverpool.

Mo Salah (18PTS).

MOTM. Salah was on a mission to score a hat-trick and nearly got it with the last kick of the game. I was surprised to see him scream at his teammates when they didn’t give him the ball. His eyes are locked on the Golden Boot and he is currently five goals behind leader Jamie Vardy.

⚽️ Salah has 100 goal involvements in 104 games for Liverpool (73G, 27A).

The bad.

Raul Jimenez (2PTS). This is what I wrote on Jimenez last week: “Wolves must create more chances to score. Until they do, Jimenez won’t be considered for the captaincy. His starting spot in my team could even be threatened by a new arrival.”

Nothing’s changed, except his place in the team is now in jeopardy. I have my eyes on Danny Ings GW36.
