Fantasy Strategy.
Deja vu. Last season with my team around 200k in the Overall Rank, I prepared for a big Blank Gameweek by selling KDB and Grealish. Then COVID shut down the league, but the transfer hits still counted! ❌
KDB and Grealish returned with a new schedule, a Double Gameweek, and I was forced to bring them back using a chip while others used an extra free Wildcard!
In some ways, managers who planned ahead were punished. We’re seeing it again right now as managers brought in City players on a Wildcard and their fixture was postponed due to COVID.
This season I have a simple approach to the fixture chaos:
“Take it game by game making adjustments as needed”
The idea is to avoid planning too far in advance because things are changing quickly. Once I reach the Blank and Double Gameweeks, then I’ll make more aggressive moves to target them, including taking hits. But it will be closer to the respective deadlines.
GW16 Review.
GW16 points: 49PTS (AVG: 37). Upper 90 Studios climbed to 180k in the Overall Rank!
The Results.
Andy Robertson (9PTS). A heavy knock to his ankle early on wasn’t enough to slow him down. Robertson picked up a clean sheet and maximum bonus against a well-drilled Newcastle side.
Stuart Dallas (12PTS). LEGEND. 😍 The Premier League is riddled with ridiculous new rules like linesmen not raising their flag when a player is five yards offside. Leeds United are the opposite – uncomplicated with non-stop action. What you see is what you get.
Bruno Fernandes (6PTS, vice captain). His assist to Rashford in stoppage time made the difference, but it was a disappointing performance in which he gave away possession 23 times.
⚽️ Bruno Fernandes ended the calendar year with 26 goals and 17 assists in 45 appearances.
Captain Blank.
Mo Salah (6PTS, captain). Back-to-back blanks against teams that defend deep. Salah and Mane rarely looked for each other in dangerous areas, instead forcing a difficult pass to Firmino.
Che Adams (1PTS). Much needed substitution and rest after taking a nasty kick to the head from Craig Dawson. Adams was unlucky GW15 with a strange rebound off the bar from a Ward-Prowse free kick, and he provided an assist to Danny Ings that was disallowed by VAR for offside.
Jack Grealish (2PTS). A constant thorn for defenders, always driving his team forward. Aston Villa are now fifth in the table with two games in hand. The concern is Grealish is on four yellows for the season. If he gets booked GW17, will he serve the one-match ban in the FA Cup?
Patrick Bamfordinho (8PTS). 🇧🇷
Son, Kane and Coufal did not play. I’m grateful that my team scored 12 points above the average while being down two players. I understand others might not have been so lucky. Some things are out of our control, it’s not a reflection on us as managers.
Players to watch.
Raphinha (8PTS) and El Ghazi (7PTS). Two affordable midfielders punching above their weight with a Double Gameweek 19 on the horizon.
Chips Strategy.
The plan is similar to the previous video >>> Minimalist Guide to Blank and Double Gameweeks. Transfers were pushed forward one week after a real injury to Lamptey and fake injury to Chilwell.
- Free Hit Chip BGW18
- Transfer(s) DGW19
- Possible Bench Boost DGW19
I’m open to taking hits Gameweek 19:
- Maximize scoring potential DGW19
- Build a strong team for the long-run
- Save the second Wildcard for the future
GW17 Transfers.
Transfers OUT: Branthwaite
Transfers IN: Justin
My team was two players short GW16, maybe it’s time to upgrade the bench. 🙂 Justin steps in with an eye on DGW19 while providing cover for Vardy who is not one of my top targets for the double.
Captain.
Harry Kane is set as captain after welcoming a baby to the family. Hat-trick for the baby! 👶👶👶 Another reason is Leeds leave space at the back when they push high into the attack. Kane and Son could exploit the gaps, but Mourinho must provide the system to create chances and score goals.
⚽️ Only West Brom (35) has conceded more goals this season than Leeds United (30).
Be sure to leave your comments and thoughts below. Thanks and good luck!!! 😎💯-Bruno

Hi Bruno…Happy New Year…let’s hope the door hits 2020’s a*s on the way out!
GW16 with 52 points. I have 1 FT with 1.4 banked. Current team which I pretty much like looking forward:
Martinez (Button)
Robertson, Dallas, Justin, (Coufal, Douglas)
Salah, Son, Fernandes, Soucek (Bissouma)
Kane, Adams, Bamford
Thinking of keeping the team as is this GW. I’m not pleased with Justin for sometime but given LC playing Newcastle, I am tempted to keep him one more GW and switch him out GW19 for a Southhampton defender (GW18 plan to do a freehit).
I am tempted to switch out Soucek for Neto this GW, but worried it will limit my flexibility going forward with only 0.4 left in the bank. Would appreciate your thoughts on that switch.
Finally, on captain….Salah has a good record vs SouthH, BUT Fernandes has been doing well even when MU is not…and also am wondering to I go with a rested Son or Kane vs LEEDS? Would appreciate your thoughts here as well.
Thank you in advance.

Happy New Year! I know right? 52 is a good score in another horror week of surprises.
I’m considering Justin for my team, but will take another look at Southampton defenders. I’m undecided on Vardy for DGW19 and was looking at Justin for Leicester cover. Decent fixture next versus Newcastle.
Soucek might be a quality option for DGW19, so it’s not easy. Neto is high on my list for the Free Hit BGW18. Your call whether to jump in a bit sooner… he creates chances in a hard working side. Soucek is a strong threat in the air, somewhat dependent on set pieces.
Salah and Liverpool fell a bit short in the last two games. Fernandes has been slightly better than Salah, but also flat last game. Leaning toward Kane or Son. As you said, they will be fully rested. Leeds have conceded the second most goals this season behind only West Brom.
Thanks for the comment. -Bruno

Ola Bruno,
Happy new years to you and your family. Hope you have a great one!! It was a frustrating week in FPL with only 9 of my players playing. Luckily i ended up on above average points with 49. I have a very big dilemma this week and need your input. I already have Kane in my team and i will be captaining him. I am very scared of not owning Son however. Leeds can be exposed on the counters by Spurs and i can see lots of manager captaining Son this gw. Would you downgrade KDB to Son this gw even though KDB has a favorable fixture next gw and double gw on 19?
Or should i just keep faith in KDB and hope Kane is enough for this leeds game?
Thanks!

Ola. Same here with 9 players, 49 points.
Kane provides solid cover, so you might be ok with either option. Son is a strong pick this week because of the opponent, but what makes it difficult to pick one are the unknowns >>> Neither Spurs nor City have been firing on all cylinders in the attack. Guardiola said there will be 5 important players out this weekend due to COVID.
I don’t know if Spurs will return to their scoring ways from earlier in the season. Who is actually available for Man City?
It might be easier for those who have Son to keep him than others to bring him in. But you know how it is with premium players and a high ceiling – big points swings depending on who hauls any given round.
I’m going into it with a positive mindset, but accepting that anything can happen. I’ve been experimenting with swapping premium players this season. It worked for some time, a bit disappointing more recently.
If you go for Son, who is a top pick, keep an accepting attitude that anything can happen.
Thank you for the comment and Happy New Year!

Hi Bruno!!! Happy NY!!! Quik Q:

c. Cancelo
thx for prompt reply

pls add Dallas to that list

I might consider starting Dallas with his attacking potential. He scored 5 points when his team conceded 6 goals vs United. 🙂

Happy New Year!!! Without knowing who has COVID for City… actually never mind that. Cancelo will either be negative or positive, so those who intend on keeping him could be better off starting him just in case.
Cancelo is a strong pick if available. Coufal could benefit from the return of Antonio, not 100% sure who will start for West Ham. Maybe bench Dier against an attacking Leeds team?

Hope you had Nice holidays !
Made 42pts in gw16
This news are very Good for me since I don’t Have the free hit.
Don’t know who to Captain Salah or Son
Upper 90 Studios
01/01/21
Olá. You too!
Super close between the two, anything can happen with premium players and a high points ceiling. 🙂 Salah and Liverpool lost some of the energy recently which is understandable with the schedule. Spurs are coming off a disappointing spell after solid results against strong opponents.
I might look at the opponents and rest/recovery time. Leeds’s attacking style suits Son with his runs behind the defense. Spurs had a full week’s rest at the busiest period.
I have both players, captaining Kane. I would probably vice captain Son if it wasn’t for the increased possibility of games being postponed due to COVID. Spreading the risk a bit with the vc by going with two different teams.

happy new year bruno
felt lucky that I ignored all previously sgw players (man city defenders etc) on wildcard but the sudden announcement of a dgw is really annoying. Still forced to fh in 18 given I only have 3 bgw players. (bruno, rashy and taylor (who might not be fit))
The problem is that Man City’s fixtures are just too good to ignore in the long run but seemingly impossible to fit any premium city attacker in (have salah, bruno, rashy and firmino (who I plan to move to Vardy)) Think it comes down to Vardy vs Aguero and maybe try to fit Mahrez/Torres/Foden instead?
Team is Meslier Johnstone Trent Justin Taylor Robinson (Ful) Balbuena Salah Bruno Rashy Soucek Raphinha Adams Bamford Firmino and 0.8m itb. With all the news around, had to hold off on Firmino to Vardy early on in the gw so now have to take a hit to get Vardy in. Think Justin will be sacrificed to make funds. Any ideas on how to get Man City players for the double?

Happy New Year! Know what you mean. This happened to my team last season. Everything was changed in an instant and the exact players I sold ended up being the best picks after rescheduling. Plus a -8 hit on top that wasn’t wiped out…
I’ve given Fixture difficulty a lower weighting this season. The fittest teams have a chance of getting a result against anyone. We’ve just seen it with West Brom and Newcastle versus Liverpool. Liverpool were looking super sharp, then they faced two teams that ran their socks off and got a result.
Without knowing which City players have COVID and seeing their team sheet GW17, it’s difficult to suggest which City players to consider for the double.
I can tell you my current thinking. Many of my drafts have no City attackers for DGW19 to bet on managers who are less likely to rotate. If I was to bring in a City attacker, KDB could be the safest, requiring a premium player to make way but only after taking in info from the next two rounds. I’m also only making moves close to each deadline to account for late surprises.
Those are the notes. Thanks for the comment! 👍

thanks for the reply, personally wildcarded on gw29 last season to triple up on arsenal and man city for their double, then the season was postponed :/ then they gave everyone unlimited transfers and i removed mahrez and foden cos kdb and aguero were fit (were unfit originally) lost 40 points or so by making a new team with the free wildcard…mad luck that. Think I’m cursed when I wildcard for doubles and blanks… Think I will just go ahead and do Justin and Firmino to Coufal and Vardy (captain) for a hit. Good luck!

That is even worse than mine last season! It’s incredible how those who plan can sometimes make out worse. Took some time to get over how unfair it all felt.
Liking the transfers-in with an eye on DGW19. Good luck!

Hi Bruno
Do you have any suggestions for this team? I have one transfer left with 0.8 ITB and planing to free hit in GW 18 so I would like to spend this transfer I have right now.

Hi. I was posting on all the social channels and missed your comment, sorry!
I didn’t catch the latest news on Maddison… With the FH GW18, it makes sense to use the transfer. Wonder what you’ve done. One idea might be Bissouma up to a midfielder mentioned on the post, Raphinha or El Ghazi. Not sure if prices allow it.
Team is in good shape already.

That’s not good. The deadline in FPL was pushed back to 1.5 hours before kickoff this season.
It caught me off guard today, not as much with the transfers, but getting all the content out on time.

Hi Bruno, nice to see u got captian right with Kane , i kind of went for diferential fully rested Vardy instead of Son.Not the wisest decision haha.
Anyway did u might consider doing wild card this week and bringing like 8/9 players that play this gw (KDB for Salah, he looks great again and playing more forward) and in that way prepare the bench for Bench boost chip on DWG19.
It means u will save free hit for the later blank in the season and will use full force of bench boost on dgw19. I kind of think thats the best idea and i will probably go for it,only downside would be i will go whitout Salah and Roberston in dgw, well i could bring back Salah instead of KDB for DGW but KDB looks like a better option now and would have Dias + Cancelo so its not that much of a downside not having liverpool players in Double .
And last question do u use twitter maybe can i text u there ?

Hi Bruno, give that Tot-Ful will be played in 18 pls suggest the following:
gw18 team:
Dier, Stones, Cancelo
KDB, Son, Bruno
Kane, DCL*
DCL will most probably not play so i have 7 players for 18
would you FT that team? or make a hit to get another player ? DCL, Grealish ?
thx
Upper 90 Studios
11/01/21
Hi. Now we know DCL is injured and Grealish has a blank. 8-9 players seems reasonable to save the FH depending on the players, yours are pretty strong.
One idea might be Wilson in for DCL, but I’m not sure how to attack DGW19 then. Martial is another option with an eye on DGW19 depending on funds. I had him on a few FH drafts, then swapped him for the cheaper Lacazette and Arsenal cover while upgrading the backup GK.
I just finished the GW18 post with my FH team and strategy >> GW18 Blog Post: http://upper90studios.com/blank-gameweek-18-team-free-hit-chip-kdb-kane-captain/
