FPL GW33+ Review
Hey guys! No time to waste, here’s my GW33 review and transfer plan for GW34.
Choosing captain.
When choosing a captain, I consider multiple factors including team form. Liverpool haven’t been at their best for some time, even before they sealed the title. One case for captaining Salah was the possibility of a response from the players after the heavy 4-0 defeat.
It didn’t happen. Liverpool struggled to get a shot on target against Villa and it took the individual brilliance of Mane late in the game to break the deadlock. Aston Villa pushed, leaving them vulnerable on the counter.
Manchester United on the other hand have been on the rise since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes. They look like they can score with every attack and have something important to fight for, Champions League.
As far as ownership, Salah was the safe captain pick. Many FPL influencers promoted Salah as the top captain pick and it worked. Even if Salah did poorly, safety in numbers wouldn’t hurt their Overall Rank.
Experimenting with the captaincy is a viable option for those looking to make up ground quickly.
The Results.
⚽️ Upper 90 Studios dropped from 245k to 250k in the Overall Rank. Small red arrows.
GW33+ Top Performers.
Let’s break down player performances starting with the captain.
Bruno Fernandes (30PTS, Captain).
Rumors of a training ground injury involving Fernandes and Pogba were quickly extinguished. To eliminate future distractions, I muted the Twitter accounts sharing false information:
⚠️ @MirrorFootball, @MullockSMirror
⚽️ Check out @BenDinnery on Twitter for the latest injury news and updates.
Fernandes was a monster against Bournemouth! One goal, two assists and two bonus – captain! 🔥 Bruno and Pogba are showing great chemistry and understanding. Their intelligence and creativity in the midfield is a boost for Manchester United assets in FPL. They face Aston Villa next.
Christian Pulisic (6PTS).
Brilliant performance from Pulisic who deserved more points for his efforts. As mentioned in last week’s blog post, Pulisic is becoming essential in Lampard’s setup. One reason for the -4 hit was to swap Traore out for Pulisic. After watching Wolves and Chelsea in action, I’m more confident with the American going forward. The concern is his recent minutes. With Chelsea playing the early game GW34+, early lineup news could be key. If I find anything worth noting, I will add it to the ***UPDATE section at the top.
*NOTE: The only Twitter account for early lineup news that has never been wrong is @FPL_Rockstar. However, there was another account that got the Manchester City lineup right GW33. Keep in mind, some accounts are new and unproven. It could take some time for me to make changes to my FPL team based on their info.
EDIT: I want to be clear that the only account with accurate lineups so far is @FPL_Rockstar. Be careful and use the mute function to weed out misinformation.
Other: Marcus Rashford (6PTS). An improved performance from the previous game. Rashford was denied a second goal by another close offside VAR decision. Alexander-Arnold (6PTS) and Mo Salah (6PTS). Neither Liverpool nor Aston Villa played particularly well. Straightforward clean sheet for Trent and a quiet game from Salah until the assist to Mane that gave Liverpool the win.
The bad.
Raul Jimenez (2PTS). Wolves must create more chances to score. Until they do, Jimenez won’t be considered for the captaincy. His starting spot in my team could even be threatened by a new arrival.
Nick Pope (2PTS) and Charlie Taylor (2PTS). Burnley held strong until the 80th minute when a super strike from John Egan caught Pope by surprise. Despite Ben Mee missing out with a thigh injury, Burnley were defensively solid. If their captain is out for a long spell, will it affect their clean sheet potential?
Kevin De Bruyne (1PT). The dreaded 1-point cameo from the bench. To rub salt in my wounds, Sadio Mane (11PTS) scored the winning goal for Liverpool. Accepting this scenario ahead of time softened the blow (I cried a little). Always a risk when swapping premium players in Fantasy! 🙂 Hopefully a rested De Bruyne will make up for it at home versus Newcastle this week and in the long-run. GW34 captain?
GW34+ Transfers
Transfers: 1
Transfers OUT: Connolly ❌
Transfers IN: Greenwood âś…
Connolly to Greenwood.
Mason Greenwood (13PTS). Clinical finisher. 18-years old and he will only get better.
⚽️ Greenwood has scored more goals for United than Alexis Sanchez, Falcao and Di Maria combined.
GW34+ Top Cheats
Not enough time to discuss the players below. I’m publishing this post now and will try to add to it before the deadline. We can exchange ideas in the comments section. 👍

GK: Schmeichel
DEF: Justin, Azpilicueta
MID: Martial, Ward-Prowse, Antonio, Bowen
FOR: Ings
GW34+ Team
Current team, not final. The final GW34 team will be posted at the top of the page.
The starting lineup is not set. I have 3 different versions to work with. If we see reliable lineup leaks for Chelsea, and Pulisic starts against Crystal Palace, I will likely start him in my GW34 team. There could also be a decision on Greenwood versus Aston Villa or Jimenez against Sheffield United. Plus captain!

Hi Bruno, good stuff. Thanks again followed you with B.Fernandez gave me a nice green arrow to top 180k.
Few gut feeling this week.
1) Man Utd is not playing Bournemouth again this week. Aston villa fought hard against Liverpool, and going down 0-2 did not reflect their work.
2) Call me crazy, I think Chelsea gonna have it hard this week, especially kante is out. I am even considering to sell Willian for Antonio. May get Chelsea assets again for GW36+ against norwich. Chelsea not that great on aways.
3) Leaning on KDB captaincy this week. City loves to bounce back, bounce to start, and has a good record against Newcastle.
4) Jimenez looking less desirable now, their fixtures till end season doesnt look all great. Perhaps Greenwood or Ings, OR EVEN DEENEY would surprise for that price range
Just some random stuff. Thanks for reading LOL

Hi. Congrats, glad it worked for you. 👍
1) I agree. Aston Villa have been playing well since the restart, working hard.
2) Kante out is huge. He can also linkup defense to attack. Billy Gilmour came on and as promising as he is, he gave away possession a few times too easily in dangerous areas.
3) Yea, I’m slowly coming around to playing it safe. I’ve been gambling against the grain with the captaincy. Jimenez a few weeks ago, then Fernandes vs. Salah. Could go to the wire…
4) Agree. Solid replacement options with a differential mixed in.
Great reading your thoughts, please post when you can.

Hi Bruno, looking at three options above I think you should play Green and bench Jim as he looked really tired lately. Big IF Puli is not starting you ve got him covered. GL buddy

Hi Bruno, loving your content, and would appreciate your views on how to proceed.
I still have my Free Hit and Bench Boost still available. My team:
Pope (Martinez)
Doherty, TAA, Aurier, Säiss (Lascelles)
Martial, Fernandes, Salah, KDB (Cantwell)
Jiminez, Rashford (Connolly)
2 FTs, 0.4m ITB.
I’m confused about when to use my chips and FTs!
Many thanks and no problem at all if you don’t get a chance to respond.

Hi. Thank you. 👍
The important thing is your team is strong.
The chips strategy is hard to set for this round with just an hour or so before deadline. I can tell you what I did for my Free Hit and Bench Boost. I used our Fixture Difficulty Cheatsheet to be sure I was maximizing the scoring potential of my players against easier opponents.
That was a reason why I went with the BB chip GW31, switching around the popular order of the chips. No future fixtures had as many green opponents for my players (defenders and attackers). That’s just one factor, but it was a starting point to get planning.
I believe Cantwell is out this week, but he’s on your bench anyway. I don’t have anyone in Cantwell’s price range on my Watchlist. The cheapest is Ward-Prowse. Not sure if there’s anyone worth bringing in for him, assuming he returns from injury quickly.
If he doesn’t look set to return soon, one idea is to keep an eye on Jimenez vs. Ings. If Jimenez disappoints while Ings does well, that swap might allow more options in the weakest mid position. Or with an extra Wolves spot open, consider Dendoncker which can allow an upgrade in another area for the Free Hit for instance.
Those are some quick thoughts, good luck!

Hi Kiran. Yes, this is a proper opportunity for the TC chip. Whether to use it ultimately is up to you. I’d hate to say yes 100%, then it doesn’t work. I take a similar stance with all the chips because we can see big swings in the results.
KDB is the safe option. Fernandes a bigger gamble, but only when compared to KDB as Bruno is above others for the captaincy.
I’m currently on KDB for my team (not final), switched it after seeing Newcastle’s injury update.

Hi Bruno, hope all is well.
65 pts last week. Looking to refresh team. Have 2 ft and 0 banked
Pope (Martin)
TAA, Doherty, Wan-Bis, Fernandez (Simpson)
Mane, KdB, Fernandes, Traore (D Luiz)
Rashford, Jimenez, (Nketiah)
Thinking of the following changes
1. 3 transfers -4 hit. Greenwood for nketiah and Taylor for Wan and Saka for Traore and bank some money
Or more aggressive.
2. 3 transfers. 1st 2 above but then Mane out and Son in and bank more money for next week.
Would appreciate your thoughts.

Hi. Doing well, thanks.
After seeing Wolves struggle to create proper chances again, Traore is more difficult to keep with Jimenez already in. Greenwood is incredible value at the moment.
I might rate Mane and Son with even scoring potential this round. Of course Son has Bournemouth who can gift goals for fun, but Spurs have to raise their game. They have another gear to reach and aren’t getting there quickly enough.
Those are the quick notes. I don’t have a clear preference as both can work well.

Hi Bruno,
You must be pleased with how the GW is going for you. Burnley defense doing wonders for you and salah with the big haul. Unfortunately i benched Taylor because i already have pope. I also don’t own salah or any liverpool attacker. To amend this, i am thinking of the below move. Let me know your thoughts
Out: TAA and Mahrez
In: Gomez and Mane (Cannot afford salah)
Reasoning behind this is, mahrez and taa might get rotated next gw considering robertson was dropped this gw. And with mahrez starting this gw, pep might start bilva next game.
Mane should start since he was rested this gw and i don’t want to miss on his potential haul. I have 2 free transfers. What do you think? Pull the trigger or stick with taa and mahrez?
Thanks

Hi. Better yesterday 🙂
I agree it could be Trent’s turn for a rest, although it’s possible he could come off the bench.
I can’t predict what Guardiola will do. I’ve seen him start and bench players in consecutive games. For now, I’m sticking with just KDB even though even he is not 100% safe under Pep.
Salah and Mane will be pushing each other for the Golden Boot, so it could work. Burnley can be tricky to break down, but if Liverpool can sneak in a goal, Burnley pushing for a spot in Europe could leave gaps.
I don’t have a straightforward answer because it is dependent on who starts. You’re making a strong case to reduce some risk of rotation, so trust your instinct.

Hi Bruno how did you go – hope Greenwood made it off your bench. I got 82pts and up to 219k. Have taken some risks as off the grid this wknd. Sold Salah to make $ for differentials – team below. Just wondering whether to take 4pt hit to sell KDB for Mane?? Have 4.6 ITB.
Schmeichel (Pope)
TAA, Ward. Doherty (Fernandez, Lamptey)
KDB, Foden, Antonio, Bruno (VC)(Guendouzi)
Vardy (C), Ings, Jiminez

Hi. Worked out ok despite benching Greenwood who was so good… GW35+ blog post: http://upper90studios.com/taking-hit-rashford-martial-capt
Congrats on your score! We’re neck and neck now. 215k here.
Always a risk when swapping premium players, so you’d have to accept the possibility of it not working straight away. It’s easier to assess it over a longer period.
Leaning toward keeping KDB unless we hear something concrete about him being benched. It’s possible both Liverpool and City could find difficult opponents this round. Burnley are fighting hard defensively, Brighton went toe to toe with Liverpool and deserved to score more goals.

Hey Bruno,
Man greenwood and willian has been on fire.. Do you think they’ll keep it up to the end of the season?
I’m itching to take a hit to bring them in but I’m not sure who to drop… It would have to be a united player as I have Rashford, Fernandes and Martial… Leaning to Rashford, he’s been blanking lately and Martial seems to be more of the striker along with Greenwood with Bruno and Pogba doing the playmaking.
1. Considering dropping Martial for Willian then i can swap Nketiah to Greenwood…
2. Or I can drop Rashford for Greenwood and upgrade Foden to Willian.
3. Leave as is save 4 points
My team currently looks like this…
Pope (Martin)
TAA, Doherty, Aurier, (Lundstram, Lamptey)
Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Martial, Foden
Jiminez, Rashford (Nketiah)

Hey. Willian could be playing for a new contract (or to attract new clubs) and Greenwood has no pressure without fans in the stands. Both playing in strong attacking sides so it should continue.
Well, we’re on the same page: http://upper90studios.com/taking-hit-rashford-martial-captain-vardy-gw35/
Sold Rashford already to make room for Martial. I agree 100% with your thoughts on United players.
Leaning toward a move with Option 1 the standout, but it’s your call.
Great team overall.

Hi Bruno, wish you d play greenwood instead of jimmy however salah and bruno were rank changers. 88 points for me , green for a hit quickly returned can’t complain. pls advise on options below:
current team:
McCarthy/Pope
TAA, Doh, Fernandez, AWB, Lamptey
Salah, KDB, Bruno, Mahrez, Puli
Nketiah, DCL, Green
ITB 3,8 1 FT
a. Nketiah + DCL + Mahrez to
Vardy + Ings + Trossard/Doucoure for minus 8? I was planning to get Ings for gw 36+ anyway so might as well get him now as i feel he can score gainst any team . also worried about mahrez playing time
b. DCL to Vardy or Ings for free
c. Mahrez + DCL to Willian + Vardy/Ings for minus 4. Che duo looks very efficient playing together and quite nailed so double up makes lotsa sense
thx for reply

Hi. Me too, Greenwood is on fire and I’m glad it was only a 5 point swing with Jimenez. Congrats on the big score 88pts.
I’m also looking at Ings GW36 for Jimenez in my case.
a. Strong option. Another alternative in the cheaper mid spot could be Saka which might free up funds.
b. Pretty set on captaining Vardy for the reasons I wrote on the blog. Two days extra rest vs. Bournemouth and tactically it could be a good matchup.
c. Also a good option.
Between Options b+c. I was initially moving for Willian, then Rashford blanked again which made me switch to Martial and Vardy.
No preference because it’s your decision on Vardy. He can score a hat-trick or get a red card so I’d hate to point you in a set direction and it goes wrong. 🙂
