DGW19 TEAM! 46PTS (AVG: 30). The plan failed! Here’s a NEW Strategy for Double Gameweek 19! Wildcard, Bench Boost, Triple Captain or plain old transfer hits?

Fantasy Strategy.
What’s the point of planning? Good planning should increase the odds of achieving the goal – maximize results while reducing the risk. Not this season! After investing on Double Gameweek 19 players with scoring potential in the games leading up to it, fixtures were abruptly rescheduled. Leeds and Southampton no longer have a DGW19, Aston Villa suffered a COVID outbreak.
I accounted for unexpected events by taking a more short-term approach. But effective planning is dependent on a degree of stability in the field. Tottenham’s match against Fulham GW16 was called off just two hours before kickoff! Using Kane and Son as a combination differential didn’t work as intended because of circumstances beyond my control.
Do I have any regrets? The plan was to maximize points before, during and after BGW18. It wasn’t about any individual Gameweek score. Crucial games were suddenly postponed, BGW18 disappointed, and players brought in for hits no longer have a DGW19. The challenge now is to fight off the negative thoughts because that could lead do a downward spiral.
Planning is one tool of many. It can work well in situations with a high degree of predictability. But it can be rendered counterproductive with instability.
What do I do now? I watched every game. Grinding through many of them felt like a form of punishment mentally. But I did it because I don’t want to make decisions in the dark. Assessing individual and team form remains an important factor in FPL, although it’s becoming less reliable.
⚽️ If you know what to do today, then go do it and make adjustments after.

GW18 Review.
GW18 points: 46PTS (AVG: 30). Upper 90 Studios climbed to 148k in the Overall Rank.
The Results.
The Bad.
Karl Darlow (2PTS). The first half red card and penalty when the defender was pushed certainly didn’t help. But the truth is Sheffield United were up for this game. Steve Bruce invited the opponent to attack with his defensive approach, which they did by playing all their strikers!
Callum Wilson (2PTS). Should’ve scored with a header in the first half, but he was almost caught off guard by the driven first-time cross. Wilson was feeding off scraps even before the red card.
Romain Saiss (1PT). Everton were without their top striker Calvert-Lewin and I wanted to use Saiss as a differential against Tierney. Iwobi turned into Messi and scored five minutes in. 🙂
Pedro Neto (2PTS). He was creating chances from open play when he was taken out by a Doucoure tackle from behind. Never really recovered from the knock to his knee and is a doubt for GW19.
Bruno Fernandes (2PTS). Passed him up as captain or vice captain after a recent dip in levels.
Alexandre Lacazette (2PTS). One of the most infuriating performances from a Fantasy standpoint. With short recovery time between games, players must run with a purpose and save their energy. Lacazette chased defenders instead of combining with teammates in the attacking play. ❌
The Good.
Ruben Dias (7PTS) and João Cancelo (6PTS). Ruben Dias made everything look easy, Cancelo played a free role with less defensive responsibility.
Harry Kane (8PTS) and Son Heung-min (2PTS). The scoreline is less important in Fantasy than performances. Kane’s diving header helped him earn two bonus points. Son nearly tucked in a cross in the first half, then struck the post in the second with a trademark run in behind.
Captain Success.
Kevin De Bruyne (12PTS, captain). Excellent showing deserving of double digit returns in FPL. Two chances to score with just the keeper to beat, then earned a penalty in stoppage time which Sterling skied over the bar. De Bruyne finished on 6 points but it could’ve been a hat-trick. 👍
Chips Strategy.
The plan was laid out on the previous post >>> Blank Gameweek 18 Team FREE HIT CHIP!
Which is mostly unchanged from the video >>> Minimalist Guide to Blank and Double Gameweeks

Free Hit Chip BGW18, then choose an option for DGW19:
- Transfer hits
- Bench Boost Chip
- Second Wildcard
- NEW: Triple Captain Chip
I’m settled on the Transfer hits option. The idea is to maximize scoring potential DGW19 with a mix of single and double Gameweek players, leaving a solid team for the long-run. Since Leeds and Southampton had one of their games postponed, the Bench Boost becomes less enticing. Che Adams was previously on the bench, he makes way. Wildcard is saved.
GW19 Transfers.
GOALKEEPERS: Martinez
DEFENDERS: Justin, Coufal, Dallas
MIDFIELDERS: Salah, De Bruyne, Fernandes, Son, Soucek
FORWARDS: Kane, Bamford
BENCH: Mitchell
7x DGW players: Martinez, Justin, Coufal, Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Soucek
4x SGW players: Dallas, Bamford, Son, Kane
Five high-ceiling premium attackers at the expense of team balance:
- Salah
- De Bruyne
- Fernandes
- Son
- Kane
Captain.
Kevin De Bruyne is set as captain with two favorable home fixtures. The king of the Double Gameweek returns as vice captain – Mo Salah. Triple Captain Chip is an option DGW19.

Hi again Bruno, I also had terrible luck last gw… Gundogan could easily have few assists, I went Dier instead of Regulion which was so painful and I had Tierney who didn’t play and I ended up getting Clark of the bench instead of Mitchell… I’m having bit of trouble with my team, should I bench boost or not and which transfers I should make? I don’t have any free transfers left and money in bank 1.3m. Any tips much appreciated.
McCarthy
Cancelo, Dallas, Coufal
Harrison, Salah, Fernandes, De Bruyne
Bamford, Vardy, Antonio
Bench: Johnstone, Lowton, Holding, Bissouma

Hi. That’s a rough one with Mitchell stuck on the bench!
I just noticed the smallest rumors that Leeds vs. Southampton could be back on DGW19 due to COVID issues at Shrewsbury (Southampton’s FA Cup opponent). This is unbelievable.
That bit of information could help determine whether you should bench boost or not as it would give you four extra players with a DGW. Harder to make any other decisions without knowing the latest on LEE vs. SOU.
-Bruno

15/01/21
Really? That would be great but that messes up my transfer plan little bit, I am tempted to bring in Dias/Stones for Lowton or Soucek for Bissouma. Can’t do both since i’m missing 0.1m.
to be honest I’m more annoyed about Regulion than Mitchell. This season have been crazy, I don’t know what to expect anymore.
Upper 90 Studios

It is the craziest season. I’ve been playing since 2007 and have never seen this many postponements and players missing out without warning.
Nothing confirmed with Leeds vs. Southampton and the deadline is not too far away. No matter what, I’ve already made moves with price changes in mind as waiting would price me out of the ideal players.
If you don’t already, keep an eye on price changes here: http://fplstatistics.com/
Soucek is a threat from set pieces as teams tire and lose concentration near the end of games. He should also have high ownership with strong FPL managers. Manchester City defensive cover makes sense with their CS record.
-Bruno
Heikkineu
15/01/21
I would do those moves right away if I wasn’t 0.1m short on money. So now I probably have to keep Lowton if I’m going to play bench boost or just go without bench boost and get Stones. If Leeds don’t have double gw I could take out Harrison, Bissouma and Lowtown and replace them with Soucek, Smith Rowe and Dias.
Upper 90 Studios
15/01/21
Soucek, Smith Rowe and Dias feels a strong change for DGW19 and the future. The only note is the info on Leeds. I don’t know the latest or whether we’ll have any official confirmation either way before deadline.
Heikkineu
16/01/21
Just cheked Southamptons, FA’s and Shrewsbury’s twitter pages nothing there yet. Still trying to figure out if it’s worth taking -12 hit for those transfers, my bench would be Johnstone, Dallas, Smith Rowe & Holding. Dias & Soucek on pitch.
Upper 90 Studios
16/01/21
I don’t know if there will be an announcement either way until after deadline, so it might be reasonable to plan as if there was no DGW for LEE+SOU and just keep it in mind if you make a compromise in the final decision.
Heikkineu
16/01/21
Watching Leeds game and wondering why on earth I didn’t make Smith Rowe and Dias transfers. Johnstone of course got coronavirus and it was announced 30minutes after deadline. I love FPL.
Upper 90 Studios
18/01/21
Don’t know why Leeds turned their playing surface into a potato field. And all the surprise announcements after deadline, on a DGW!
This season is completely out of control. The rule changes are ridiculous, the linesman not raising his flag when a player is 5 yards offside. Matches postponed two hours before kickoff. Players can’t celebrate, which I understand with COVID, but what is this game anymore…
Can’t wait for things to return to normal hopefully next season.

I’m so gutted, annoyed and angry for not bringing in Stones/Dias on my team. On hindsight I should have transferred Dallas out and bring in Stones for -4.
Pitch was awful and didn’t help Leeds at all but I still think the should have won that game or at least get a goal. Potato field describes it perfectly.
Players can’t celebrate goals but can get near each other in corners etc. bit ridiculous but ofc people need to follow guidelines and I understand it completely.
Seems like Vardy broke he’s angle so more bad luck for my team.
Offside rule must be so annoying for players, they are doing sprints and are fighting for ball for nothing. In worst case someone gets injured before ref blows the whistle for offside.

This my team for DGW19
GK= Martinez
DEF= Dias, Coufal, Zouma
MID= Soucek, Salah, Bruno, Son
FWD= Antonio, Bamford, Vardy
Bench= McCarthy, Saka, KWP, Taylor
I’ve already used my transfer to bring Antonio for DCL
1) Should I take any hits to bench boost, if so then for who?
2) Who to captain, Salah or Vardy?
Thanks for the help Bruno👍
It’s been a really long time since you’ve last uploaded a video, really miss your guidance.
Upper 90 Studios
15/01/21
Liking the transfer as DCL has a blank and knock.
1) I just noticed the smallest rumors on Twitter that Leeds vs. Southampton could be back on DGW19 due to COVID issues at Shrewsbury (Southampton’s FA Cup opponent).
That bit of information could help determine whether to bench boost or not. Harder to make any new transfer decisions without knowing the latest on LEE vs. SOU.
2) That’s a tough one! Salah tends to really crush it in Double Gameweeks. Vardy has been carrying a hip issue and I’m not sure if he starts both games. Either way, both are top options. Stuck on the final choice!
Yes, I’m missing the videos as well. And I haven’t had time to make music. Hopefully things will settle down in fantasy and real life real soon. 🙂
Thanks for the great comment. -Bruno

Hi Bruno.
I enjoy to hear you are doing pretty well this season( Great job, well deserved).
My plan is to use FH this GW19, I had 47 points(-4) from GW18 not bad above average, and my team so far is:
Mendy
Cresswell Dias Robertson
KDB Salah *Bruno Gundogan Soucek
Vardy Watinks
£102.3 team value
£0.3 in bank
I am concerned about Bruno’s yellow card especially they play Liverpool first and both teams will fight for first place. So maybe Rashford for Bruno and *Abraham for Watinks IF I make the change.
For captain I will do Salah, he is rested and loves big games.
Any suggestion I am more than happy to listen.
Boa sorte Bruno.

Hi. Thank you. Things could be worse considering everything that has been happening this season in FPL.
Good point with Bruno. It was one of the reasons I dropped Grealish as I was a little concerned heading into a DGW with two players on four yellows.
You could be right about Salah! I tried hard to keep him this round as he loves a Double Gameweek.
No suggestions that can beat your ideas. Team could be set as is if you accept the yellow card risk, and the alternative also makes sense.
Strong FH team, boa sorte!

Hey Bruno!
Had a bit of cursed BGW18 using my Free Hit, since my team I posted in your last blog I changed Rashford -> Sterling and went for double Newcastle defence instead of double Man City, captained B Fernandes and finished on 36pts. Silver lining though, I managed to win by 2 pts in the cup against a dead account😅
This week I planned on bench boosting but due to fixture changes I decided to save my chip and also save a transfer as my team is in good shape, I’m now wondering if I should play my Triple Captain DGW19 or not. My options are two popular and two unorthodox:
KDB – My favourite choice but I’ve heard from other that KDB looks too tired to play both games so that would be a waste of TC
Salah – A popular choice but I’m not keen based on the fact he’s not scored or assisted the last 3 GWs
Cancelo – Man City are looking like one of the defences in the game and play two home games against Palace and Villa, but is there a risk of Pep rotation?
Robertson – An alternative to the Cancelo idea and a fellow Scotsman, this option is more thinking with heart than brain
Any thoughts would be appreciated and liking the look of your team for DGW19, Good Luck!!
Upper 90 Studios
15/01/21
Hey! That’s funny with the cup! Unreal luck with the changes, but you have a silver lining. My cup opponent had like 4-5 players and nearly beat me. 🙂
I like KDB’s potential as captain. Triple Captain is an option, although there is a small risk for the reason you mentioned. I’m not sure if I’ve ever used the TC chip on KDB… There is so much confusion over the fixtures that I don’t know the best time to use the TC. Currently leaning toward holding off, but if I use it this round, it would be KDB.
I agree on Salah as well. It would be a lot easier if he and Liverpool were scoring some goals heading into it. The absence of key defenders is pulling other players out of position like Henderson which affects the attack.
Always a risk of rotation with Pep. Walker and/or Mendy might get a game soon. If I used the Wildcard this week and moved for City defenders, I’d make sure I had proper bench cover when they are given a rest.
I think I may have captained a defender once in 13 seasons playing FPL, Marcos Alonso which worked ok. This one is up to you as there is some potential with the DGW. Fixtures aren’t the easiest to predict for Liverpool.
Those are the thoughts for now. Good luck!!!

Hi Bruno,
What are your thoughts on Antonio and Grealish?
Contemplating if I should keep Grealish or if I should bring in Watkins/Antonio?
Many thanks for your advice as always!
Upper 90 Studios
15/01/21
Hi. Both great picks. Even better if they play twice. 🙂 After recent luck not going my way, I was a little concerned heading into a Double Gameweek with two players on four yellows: Fernandes and Grealish. Every factor counts and I decided to drop Grealish in favor of a premium midfielder.
In a way, Watkins has an indirect risk if Grealish is banned for the second game as it could impact Villa’s attack potential. Antonio has a high ceiling with his explosive style. The concern is he doesn’t have a great record with injuries and I don’t know if Moyes will manage his minutes with short recovery time between games.
Those are some notes. Small risk with the players, but it can also work if you feel like taking a chance.

Ola Bruno,
I decided not to use my free hit in gw 18 and instead went with 3 transfers with a hit. I ended up with 51(-4) so happy with the outcome in hindsight. Below is my current time for dgw19. Currently have 8 starters with dgw but that will change with tranfers
Martinez
Cancelo, Stones, Maguire
KDB, Bruno, Son, Grealish, Soucek
Kane, Bamford
Bench: Button, Holding, Lowton, Brewster
I need to get Salah back this week and below is how i can get him. Let me know which option you suggest
1) Son & Kane —> Salah and Vardy.
I know it’s a big risk taking Son and Kane because of their ownership but i am getting 2 dgw players. Also spurs play Liverpool in gw20, which won’t be easy. This gives me 10 dgw players plus bamford
2) Maguire & Son —> Coufal and Salah
Salah for the above reason. Coufal because west ham seems to have the best dgw of all teams. This gives me 9 dgw players with Kane and Bamford
Both options are with -4 hit. Please let me know your thought.
Thanks
Upper 90 Studios
15/01/21
Ola. That’s the perfect outcome with your BGW18 plan, well done.
1) Reasonable plan for the reasons you mentioned. I’m willing to take a chance against the majority and keep Kane and Son as a differential combination. But Salah and Vardy are super enticing with two games this round. Small risk Vardy may not play both games with the hip issue.
2) West Ham defensive cover against weaker attacking sides. Coufal could have high ownership with strong managers DGW19 and a proper target for his crosses in Antonio.
Strange things have been happening for some time with top picks blanking and random players scoring. At this moment, I’m worried about steering others in the wrong direction until I get a better sense of form.
I don’t know which plan to choose, but I agree that Salah is a strong option in a Double Gameweek. I had the same dilemma and in the end, I kept Kane and Son while bringing in Salah. It’s hard to pick which Spurs player to cut. Even though their team is getting some criticism, Kane and Son could’ve easily scored double digits last game and have a high scoring potential GW19, especially if Sheffield United go for it again as they did against Newcastle.

Gidday Bruno… I too watched all the GW 18 matches. It seems I’m the only person not wanting KDB. He is looking in need of a rest. He had his hands on his knees blowing hard after 75 mins. To me it’s a risk. Thoughts?
Upper 90 Studios
15/01/21
Hello. It makes sense, he gives 100% every game.
Even with City’s depth, KDB is irreplaceable. It feels like every time Guardiola drops him, they struggle. Even against weaker sides.
In my experience with DGWs, and depending on the player, sometimes the best scenario is if he starts one game then comes off the bench in the other. I can see KDB being rested in one of the two games and working his socks off in the other. I’m hoping the experiment with 5 premium attackers will pay off over a period of 2-3 games. 👍

I’m planning on bench boosting this week, but don’t currently own de bruyne and am going to need to take a big hit for him
Current team
Martinez, McCarthy
Robertson, Chilwell, cancelo, Dallas, dier
Salah, Bruno, son, Soucek, raphinha
DCL, Bamford, Adams
Current transfer plan is
Robertson —> Justin
Dier —> coufal
Raphinha —> KDB
DCL —> Watkins
Adams —> Rodrigo
(-16)
Team if transfers are made
Martinez, McCarthy
Coufal, Justin, Dallas, Chilwell, cancelo
Salah, Bruno, son, KDB, Soucek
Watkins, bamford, Rodrigo
De bruyne the would be captain and bench boost would be used
Thoughts?
Upper 90 Studios
16/01/21
There is a slight risk with Watkins without knowing exactly who has a COVID issue at Villa. But it could work if he’s ok.
I’ve never taken a -16 hit, although I’m on a -12 hit now. 🙂
The new team is strong as long as everyone is ready to play. KDB is a top captain pick.
Some quick notes as deadline is just half hour away.

Hi Bruno,
Thought on TC KDB? Been debating all week, I just have a feeling that a double digit is not impossible for him, even if rested. Thoughts? Do you see a better time to reply the chip?
Upper 90 Studios
16/01/21
Hi. It’s an option this week. There is a risk that he gets some rest, and even so, he can still deliver double digits.
I don’t know if there will be a better time to use it, although we’re seeing lots of games postponed. One thing holding me back is I’ve been using the TC chip on Salah for the last 2-3 seasons with success. Never used on KDB, but that doesn’t mean it can’t work.
I’m replying to comments for a bit, then checking my team one last time before making a last second decision. 50/50 at the moment…
-Bruno
