FPL Season Review
It’s finally over! I’m slowly coming around after what turned out to be my second worst finish in over ten years playing. Good or bad, I’d love to hear how you’ve done this season in the comments. 👊
Considering everything that happened, I might look back and think of this season in a better light.
- I put up a video or blog post every single Gameweek, except for a small Christmas break.
- There was the league suspension which derailed my Chips and Blank/Double Gameweek plans.
- The website was shut down. Hundreds of blog posts turned off.
You wouldn’t believe what happened with the website if I told you. Maybe one day I can bring back the content from the old posts in another form.
And it’s not all about the Overall Rank. I value your friendship and support throughout this season. Even if you don’t post a comment, I thank you just for being here.
I hope you stick around next season as we improve our skills in FPL. I’m not here just to create content, you can reach out to me anytime. Some of you already do!

GW38+ Points.
I’m still trying to process how Sterling (8PTS) only scored one goal against Norwich. He had at least a thousand chances (at least) and ended up being outscored by Mahrez (9PTS) who was benched.
Sterling couldn’t even beat the cheapest forward in the game Aaron Connolly (8PTS). Sterling scored 17 points in his previous game before I brought him in, so this doesn’t bother me at all. 🙂
Kevin De Bruyne (19PTS) 🇧🇪 was on a different level. Bruno Fernandes (11PTS) 🇵🇹 the penalty king.
Speaking of penalties, Ings scored from the spot after missing one as my captain last week. Small red arrows GW38+. The end.
Favorite Moments.
Making up 2 million places in the Overall Rank in one month. From November to December, Upper 90 Studios climbed from 2.6 million in the OR to 450k starting with a -12 hit.
Chips.
The chips performed well, although some could argue their effectiveness was reduced with the league suspension. I was excited to use the chips in a big Double Gameweek GW37 with high ceiling players from strong teams involved. It never happened.
Worst Moments.
The league suspension. As a compromise to save the chips, I took multiple hits leading up to a blank GW31 that never came. I ended up selling players who came back to a Double Gameweek!
Managers who planned for the blank with hits while saving their chips for later in the season might feel hard done by the schedule change. By managers, I mean me.
Upper 90 Studios was at its best Overall Rank of the season 211k GW28 before Premier League games were affected by the pandemic.

Hey Axel. Appreciate that, thanks. The quick deadlines after the break made it difficult to record videos. By the time I was done with a video, I changed my mind on the transfer plan and the video didn’t make sense.
So I ended up writing blog posts that were easy to edit until the deadline.
YouTube is more fun. The videos will be back as normal, assuming no more strange scheduling in the league! 👍

Hi Bruno, how are you? was anylizing Alexandr Antonov’s OR 1 moves in gws 1 and 2 and what an absolute non-standart and quite risky play from his side! The guy finishes around 2,3 mil after gw 1. In gw 2 he uses his first WC with only gw 1 data and stats, puts C on Digne who scored 11 points, gets 103 points overall and jumps!!! to 1,7k position, and from there on steadily going towards winning the FPL. Previous season very much showed luck factor behind some decisions. Just trying to set my mind to try to achieve balanced approach bw risk play and template team set up. thought I d share this info with you and U90 community.

Hi. So much just happened! A tropical storm came through Connecticut on Tuesday. Close to a million people without power and internet. Still no power and it could be over a week before it’s restored. Using a generator now but the internet is already back. We are ok which is most important and I can finally reply to your comment. 👍
I’m a fan of the early Wildcard, although I haven’t quite nailed it in recent seasons as well as he did. Worth experimenting with calculated risks to get an advantage while keeping in mind the popular template.

Just checking in to see how are you buddy?. How are you and the family with the tropical storm?.
My 2019/2020 season was initially a bit of a rollercoaster, but with a positive streak during lockdown improved to a 433k OR, after some attacking transfers and gut decisions. My thought is to be more attacking and use more gut feel decisions in the new year, but limiting hits more.
Some Early New Season Thoughts:
1.I believe the FPL season might start with a twist with a likely blank and double gameweek or two thereafter for teams progressing in Europe……Chip strategy could be dramatically different with possible better earlier use of triple captain and benchboost….in first half of season
2.I believe its likely to be 3 substitutes again, after premier league teams voted against use of 5 substitutes.
3.I believe premium prices might be quite high, if 2019/2020 points are considered, with so many top players, especially mids and defenders/keepers shining in the top 20 points scorers overall.
4.There could also be a lot of top players positions being reclassified, as many played out of position the past season.
5. How will VAR change, if any in the new season could also be key…..if only refs use the onsite screen monitor more….

Hi. Better now! Thanks. 🙂 That storm knocked out power and internet for a week. Concerns over our power company here in CT. Astronomical increase in customer rates during a pandemic, rise in their executives’ salaries, minimal spend in storm preparation and massive reduction in crews to restore the damage. Long story short, they are in a $1.5 billion class action lawsuit now.
Still a respectable finish with such a strange season. I like your new strategy!
1. Yes, this will be a curve ball with key teams and players unavailable at the start.
2. I like that! I’m also not a fan of the drinks breaks disrupting the flow of the game.
3. We’ll have to uncover some hidden value players.
4. Yes. I’m imagining key defenders as midfielders without CS points. Or Aubameyang as a mid…
5. FIFA is forcing the Premier League to comply with the VAR rules this season. They can no longer make up their own interpretations like discouraging the referee from looking at the pitchside monitor. I saw a video clip of MLS broadcasting the live audio and video conversation between referee and the VAR officials… imagine how transparent VAR could be?
I have to get a pre-season plan going soon. Thanks for the update and I’ll talk to you soon.

As always, your opinion means a lot when it comes to advice about my team, so here’s my first draft after finding out the fixtures…
Ramsdale (Nyland)

Vardy | Mitrovic (Davis)
ITB = 1.0
Notes/Questions:
1. Hoping that Sheffield continues their good defensive form from last season, that’s why I’m spending the extra 0.5 on Ramsdale. Your thoughts on ‘keepers?
2. I’m quite satisfied with the selection and pricing of my defense. Justin could be any 4.5 defender – which would you recommend?
3. I’m looking to have Salah, KDB & Bruno Fernandes in my team for most of the season so I plan to replace Auba with KDB in GW3 (and possibly/probably also do Son>Bruno Fernandes – that’s why I’ve left 1.0 “in the bank”). I’m undecided between Armstrong and Saint-Maximin – Which would you prefer?
4. I would love to own Jiminez, but I feel that Vardy could/will be more explosive.
5. I notice that Werner is a popular selection. I’m planning to ‘wait and see’ how he adapts. I know he comes with quite a pedigree. Do you think it’s prudent to wait or might I miss out?
Any comments/advice would be appreciated.

Hi. Doing well, thanks!
1. Like this plan. Keep an eye on Aston Villa if they sign a first team keeper in the next few weeks. That extra bump from Ryan/McCarthy to Pope can limit key options in other positions, so I’ll look into Ramsdale and include him in more drafts. 👍
2. Justin is good for now. Possibly a Burnley defender like Taylor to counter Pope owners, although Taylor needs to stay fit. There are a few more options in this price range which I’ll share on the first draft video soon.
3. Leaning toward Armstrong for now, although there was a good amount of rotation at Southampton toward the end of the season. That could’ve been related to the lack of recovery time between games…
4. Good point. Pros and cons for both.
5. Still researching, but I’ve had good success with proven FPL players at the start. New players adapting to the league is a factor, although there are examples of newcomers who settled quickly.
