FPL GW33+ Team
🚨 Final GW33+ Team! 🚨
***UPDATE: Two transfers confirmed, KDB and Pulisic in for Mane and Traore. Fernandes captain against Bournemouth, Salah vice. Lascelles first off the bench. If his injury is a cut to the ankle, he could either start or not be risked at all. Connolly would step in against Norwich. Thanks and good luck!!!
Transfer plan revealed below. But first, I have something to get off my chest. My level of enjoyment for the game has been steadily declining for some time. VAR has made things even worse.
VAR is the worst thing that has ever happened to football. Forget the disallowed Kane goal. How does a foul on Lucas Moura end in a free kick against him? These embarrassing decisions are happening every week and it has a massive impact in Fantasy. The officials on the pitch are no longer in charge. They are excused from making decisions, yet they are the ones who feel the emotion of the players, they can judge the speed and danger in a tackle.
If the referee is the most qualified official, why isn’t he checking the pitch-side monitor for clear and obvious errors?
My wife and kids are on summer vacation. We want to build a backyard deck in time for those cool nights in late summer. 🙂 I’ve been taking time away from them to watch too many boring games with outrageous VAR decisions.
I’m still committed to FPL, don’t worry. Aiming for a top 100k finish! With VAR, this is not the game I love. I hope it comes back stronger than ever very soon. 👍💯 -Bruno
FPL GW32+ Review
Hey guys! With another quick deadline approaching, here’s a GW32 review and transfer plan for GW33.
Combination differentials.
To keep the momentum going after two strong Gameweeks, I used the Wildcard GW32+. A key component was to stick with Salah and Mane as a combination differential (no KDB). Another element was the addition of two high-ceiling players Son and Rashford to take advantage of a swing in fixtures for the new and departing players. The initial results were far from ideal. Now I’m testing a new and exciting player combination – De Bruyne and Pulisic?
The Results.
⚽️ Upper 90 Studios dropped from 205k to 245k in the Overall Rank.
GW32+ Top Performers.
Let’s break down player performances starting with the MVPs. 🙂
Nick Pope (9PTS), Charlie Taylor (7PTS).
Starting two Burnley players at the back has been a major boost. In the last two Gameweeks, Pope and Taylor combined for 32 points, an average of 8 points per player. Pope is now up to £5m, Taylor is just £4.3m – incredible fantasy value. Part of the reason for gambling on double Burnley at the back was our Fixture Difficulty Cheatsheet that gave the green light for Burnley defensive players GW31 and GW32.

Matt Doherty (6PTS).
Slow and boring game, clean sheet. Another vital three points for Wolves that keeps them in the hunt for a Champions League spot.
Bruno Fernandes (15PTS).
I was happy just to see his name in the starting lineup! Fernandes delivered beyond my expectations after playing the full 120 minutes in the FA Cup. Two goals, two bonus points and an early rest in the 63rd minute. I’ve had the opportunity to watch him play in person against Liverpool in pre-season. Even in a friendly, he stood out. As a Benfica fan, I welcome him to my FPL team. 🙂 Up next, Bournemouth.
⚽️ Bruno Fernandes has been involved in 8 goals in 8 games (5G, 3A).
The bad.
Alexander-Arnold (0PTS). Zero points in FPL and it could’ve been worse. In the 49th minute, his throw-in went straight to Gabriel Jesus who should’ve scored. Hopefully Trent can raise his concentration levels against Aston Villa on Sunday.
Mo Salah (2PTS), Sadio Mane (2PTS). A day to forget. Salah struck the post in the first half and Mane also had chances. The original plan was to use both players as a combination differential, especially if Klopp plays his strongest team for the season run-in. The question is whether I can afford to have two premium Liverpool attackers if their teammates coast through more games this season. Another factor is the form of Kevin De Bruyne, a rank-killer for my team.
Marcus Rashford (2PTS). Even though they ultimately lost 3-0, Brighton defenders did an excellent job marking Rashford and Martial out of the game. Without space to attack, Rashford was forced into shots from distance that were off the mark.
Heung-Min Son (6PTS). Unfortunately for Son, Lo Celso came into the lineup and took over set pieces, both corners and free kicks. The positive was Son’s assist to Kane late in the game, which earned him a bonus point. The concern is the psychological impact on Tottenham after losing 3-1. I mentioned the VAR incident involving Moura, but there was also an elbow on Son by a player who had just been booked seconds earlier. VAR never checked for violent conduct, which is ironic since Son was found guilty of a similar incident earlier this season.
Players sold.
As far as the players sold on the Wildcard, the results were mixed. Matt Ritchie (0PTS) missed out through injury. Ismaila Sarr (2PTS) continues to show flashes of brilliance, but he has to work on his final ball. Calvert-Lewin (2PTS) blanked against Leicester.
Danny Ings (13PTS) was a beast against Watford. As mentioned on the GW31+ blog post, Ings is one of the most physically-fit players I’ve seen since the relaunch. I have no problem setting aside my ego to do what’s best for the team. Danny Ings slots right back into my Watchlist. If the current forwards don’t deliver, Ings could replace them or return in a change of formation from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3.
That’s how the players did, so what’s the plan for GW33?
GW33+ Transfers
Transfers: 2 (-4 hit)
Transfers OUT: Mane, Traore ❌
Transfers IN: De Bruyne, Pulisic ✅
Mane to de Bruyne.
Sadio Mané (2PTS). I was so excited to use Salah and Mane as a combination differential. To afford them, there was no room for De Bruyne. Then Liverpool were humbled by Manchester City 4-0 in a head-scratching performance by the new champions. Mane had opportunities to deliver a return, and he could bounce back against Aston Villa. Even if he does, I’m managing rank threats by testing out different player combinations in the season run-in. Plus, I already have Salah. 👍
Kevin De Bruyne (14PTS). 🇧🇪 A goal, an assist and maximum bonus. As a non-owner, De Bruyne is the scariest player to watch. I want to appreciate him for his brilliance without worrying about Fantasy.
⚽️ De Bruyne has 11 goals and 17 assists in the Premier League this season.
Traore to Pulisic.
Adama Traore (1PT) was benched yet again, this time against Aston Villa. Traore adds a spark whenever he’s on the pitch, but his scoring potential could be affected if he doesn’t get consistent starts. His strength is also his weakness. At his best, Traore is unstoppable. But his explosive playing style can also lead to injuries and fatigue.
Christian Pulisic (8PTS). Two assists from the American wonderkid who is fast becoming essential in Lampard’s setup. Here are some of my notes on Chelsea and Pulisic versus West Ham:
⚽️ Christian Pulisic has 2 goals and 2 assists in 3 league games since the relaunch.
Upper 90 Studios was pitchside to cover the U.S. Men’s National Team in the Gold Cup. I kept a close eye on Christian Pulisic to see if his playing style could translate into FPL points. Here’s an article on Pulisic after watching him in action: FPL PRE-SEASON Christian Pulisic | Chelsea FC

What up Bruno! Couldn’t agree more about var. ruins the match and lessens the excitement.
Season is going well but I’ve been dropping in rank. I’m down to 78k from 25k.
Here is my team.
DeGea Martinez
Aurier, TAA, Alonso, Doherty, Lascelles
KDB, Mahrez, Pulisic, Martial, Saka
Rashford, Jimenez, DCL
I have one FT and my free hit still to go. Any moves worthwhile or bank it. Planning on sitting DCL this week and possible Martial or TAA captain.
Upper 90 Studios
04/07/20
What’s up. Exactly.
No major concerns or transfers needed at this moment. Alonso can be frustrating to watch in FPL terms. He looks dangerous in the attack, especially for a defender, always involved with crosses and circling around the box. But the defending has been an issue and Lampard might try something different soon. Could be ok to continue experimenting with him and his high ceiling as long as he’s getting the starts.
Mids are set.
DCL has yet to deliver since the restart and fixtures aren’t the greatest. When I compared his fixtures to Rashford’s on our cheatsheet, I made the change. DCL’s potential could be affected if Richarlison is out, although it doesn’t seem like a serious injury if he has a chance to play on Monday.
Leaning toward a United player for captain against Bournemouth. TAA can also work, assuming we see a response from the players.
No major concerns. If Aurier and Alonso don’t deliver consistently, keep an eye on Wan-Bissaka. Never mind, you have De Gea in a triple-up already. 🙂 You could consider double Wolves defenders. I prefer Boly over Saiss who is on 9 yellows. I believe one more and he’ll be banned two games.
No changes required, only players to keep an eye on with some pressure to deliver.

Hello Bruno,
Know how you feel about VAR and the calls. Being a City fan and watching a handball (in the box) last year go uncalled to allow Spurs to go through in the UCL was frustrating, then to see Spurs get burned made me happy until Folden on the ground has the ball bounces off his hand (what 50 meters from the goal) somehow has to be overturned makes me want to laugh and cry. Ruining the game….venting over.
So 62 pts last week, heres the team, 1 FT no money on the bank (only chip triple captain):
Pope (Martin)
TAA, Wan-Bisska, Doherty, Fernandez (Simpson)
KdB, Mane, Fernandes, Traore (D. Luiz)
Rashford, Jimenez (Nketiah)
So I am thinking 3 options:
1) I fully agree with you on Traore. But with no money on the bank, not sure if there is a true value out there at 5.8M for a swap. I was thinking with the dud that Liverpool had at City (which I was very happy with), to swap Traore out for Henderson as he and Liverpool should have a fire lit under them (and keep Mane) and bank 0.5M.
2) Swap out Fernandez for Taylor to free up 0.2M, but looks like Newcastle has a better defensive run-in vs Burnley.
3) Bank the free transfer and have 2 for next week, That allows me to see if Rashford and Mane turn it around and if not move them out (at Striker I like Inges but against City this week I worry he will not see much of the ball).
So I am favoring 1, then 3. If I go 3, would you suggest a 4-3-3 and start Nketiah over Traore?
Finally, would you captain Mane/KdB or Jimenez?
I think I’ve used up all my free chip questions for the season. Sorry for all the questions, am knocking at the 100k door.
Thank you in advance.

Hello. I’m not one to complain usually. By definition, a Video Assistant Referee is supposed to be an assistant to the person in charge. Yet the referee rarely checks the pitch-side monitor. I trust the referee on the pitch now more than ever!
I remember David Silva being tripped in the box at some point in the season, VAR said it wasn’t a penalty, then months later the referee’s chief said it was a VAR error. The way they disallow goals for silly things that happen so far behind the play… no one cares or notices except VAR.
Some (not me) might even say that giving the power to officials in an office increases the chance of corruption, especially interesting for those in the betting industry.
1) There isn’t. If I had to drop Pulisic to someone in Traore’s price range or lower, it would be back to him.
2) It’s hard to make this change, especially with Newcastle looking good. Although GW33 could be tricky for them with a few knocks at the back. Burnley have two difficult games GW35-GW36, everything else should be ok. No significant advantage over Newcastle.
3) Good point with Ings and City’s possession.
Leaning toward starting Traore, hopefully he starts. I really could’ve gone either way keeping Mane and Traore. I can see them well this week, but had I waited, I wouldn’t be able to move in KDB with Pulisic because of price changes.
I would say Option 3 is the standout with a flexibility for the following week.
I have the captaincy on Fernandes against Bournemouth. I wouldn’t know who to choose between those three. Assuming they all start, it could be between KDB and Mane. Wolves and Jimenez didn’t create as many chances as I like to see, but they’re capable of turning it on in a flash.

That’s unreal luck. Barnes was benched, then as soon as he came on, Sakho slips in the box and gifts it to Barnes.
You did the right thing, nothing you can do about that outcome.

Hi Bruno
Firstly, l hope all your friends and family have been safe and well over these crazy last few months.
Like you even before the lock down VAR is certainly the worst thing to happen to football and l couldn’t agree with you more, the Lucas decision was frankly mad!!
So back to the last few weeks scoring 90 / 79 / 61 in GW32+ so a small red arrow down to 92k OR.
I made the move to trigger by WC last night (just BB left), as both Fleck and O’Connell where injury doubts and a couple of adjustments to bring in Pulisic and l want to use my last chip in GW34+.
Below is my preferred draft;
Pope / Martinez*
TAA / Wan-B* / Doherty / Fernandez / Holgate
Fernandes / KDB / Son* / Pulisic* / Martial*
Firmino* / Jimenez / Nketiah*
* denotes transfers
Firmino is little left field but his stats are very good, just not putting the ball in the net.
If TAA becomes a risk l will go to VVD
My main worry is not having one of Salah / Mane up against Villa!!
However, Man City took them apart, though they did have a couple of chances, will Klopp rotate or go for 107 pt record and batter Villa??
– l could go Son / Firmino > Salah / Calvert but he has not impressed since the re start and CL was in my original team.
– Another option is switch Son to Mahrez who scored 28pts since the restart and bring Son in GW34
– Captain choice still deciding between Fernandes / KDB
All the best
Malc
Upper 90 Studios
04/07/20
Hi Malc. Same to you. We are safe and healthy which is the most important, thanks.
Good to hear your stance on VAR. It’s interesting that referees in England rarely check the pitch-side monitor. Instead, they cower from key decisions and instantly point to their ear piece for a final ruling from VAR.
That’s exciting with the Wildcard. I like all the transfers. Can understand the concern without Salah/Mane for Villa, although Firmino could provide some insurance. He looked quicker against City than in the previous games since the restart.
I don’t know what Klopp will do. He could play his best team now after the big defeat, but every player will eventually need a break with two days rest between games. Aston Villa worked hard as a team and kept Wolves quiet for long spells, but we know what Liverpool can do when they’re on.
I’m still excited to see Son at his best and it feels like Spurs have another gear (hopefully not reverse). Mourinho has to make them stronger when things go against them like that Moura decision.
Some are assuming Mahrez will start because he was benched last game, but Guardiola doesn’t think like that. He plays the best 11 for the opponent. I had Aguero a few times this season. I remember Pep benched him in a cup competition, then benched him again in the next league game. He was fully fit and in form.
At the moment, captaincy is on Fernandes versus Bournemouth. Ole’s starters are pretty settled. KDB also a top option assuming he starts. He played in the FA Cup (subbed early), then 90min GW32 when both Silvas were rested. Now I’m trying to make sense of Pep’s rotation, so never mind. trust your instinct on the captaincy. 👍

Hey Bruno!
Completely agree with you with VAR, it’s definitely far from optimal. That Moura call was the worst one this season and completely changed the tone of that game, which was unfortunate for me cos I had 3 Spurs attackers whelp. I can understand your frustration with the game, I’ve had my share of bad weeks this season but your video have always told everyone to put the rubbish gameweeks behind us and focus on going forward, find a key to unlock your teams potential. I personally think KDB and Pulisic is an amazing shout. Well not to go full guru but spending time away from football with the family and friends (who are socially distant 😉 ) is a great way to come back with a clear and level head, so I hope you enjoy the summer weather =)
Last week I used my Free Hit and got 63 points. Had an amazing defence including Jonny (humble brag hehe), Wan-Bissaka, De Gea and Taylor. But I also only had Mane and no City, along with triple Spurs and captaining Rashford. Ya win some, ya lose some am I right haha.
This week I’m using my wildcard to completely overhaul my team and will hopefully set up a team for the rest of the season. I had to toss up between Mane or Fernandes along with Rashford or Greenwood. I’ve confirmed my transfers and I’ve settled on Mane & Greenwood, on the basis that Klopp is looking to play his strongest XI all season and Ole will rotate according to press conferences, Although I’m still open to swapping Mane and Fernandes in the near future. The wildcard team is now….
Pope (£3.9mil GK)
Wan-Bissaka, Aurier, Trent, Burn, Taylor
Mane, KDB, Mahrez, Pulisic, Saint Maxim
Jesus, Greenwood, Kane
As happy as I am with this team, I now have the issue of who to bench in GW33+?!?! Every player seems to have a reason to be played and to be dropped. Liverpool have 2 days rest after losing 4-0 against Villa who’ve had 8 days rest. City will also play Southampton after their 7 days rest. Spurs playing Everton after their 3-1 lose to Sheffield with Everton getting an extra days rest. Will Greenwood start? Will Jesus play more than 60 mins and have more than 2 shots? For a lot of teams I can’t decide how previous results are going to effect their morale in GW33+ and how fitness will play a role. Currently on the bench I have: Jesus, TAA and Taylor, but even this sounds crazy, do you have any thoughts on this? =)
Good Luck for GW33+!! Your team looks awesome and I really do enjoy these blogs =)
p.s. Did you hear about the British tabloids reporting that Pobga and Fernandes having a collision in training today and wouldn’t be available for tomorrow. Turns out that the source was a satirical article where Ole is quoted as saying “That’s f*cked me… Credit to Ed Woodward, he pre-sacked me this morning ahead of the games we’re about to lose.” Thought this was hilarious xD.

What’s up! I’m still stunned over that Moura decision and I only had Son who wasn’t even involved in the goal. You’re right though, that changed the game.
I appreciate the nice words and advice. 👍
Jonny can be a monster, excellent sneaky pick. Funny how the defense delivers sometimes.
I like the gamble. Can see Mane and Liverpool scoring to put things right after the City defeat.
Lineup idea:
Pope (£3.9mil GK)
Wan-Bissaka, Aurier, Trent (Taylor, Burn)
Mane, KDB, Mahrez, Pulisic, Saint Maxim
Greenwood, Kane (Jesus)
^^^ I guess we are pretty close. Your call in the end, but you have a strong squad that should pull you through either way.
I did see the news on Fernandes and Pogba, but that was hours ago. I haven’t checked recently. 15k managers have sold Fernandes already this round, imagine if it was because of that story.
Thanks and I wish you big green arrows!

Hi Bruno!
I know what you mean regarding VAR situation. I was shocked by that decision and the 1st west ham goal being ruled out against chelsea. They took 3 mins to look at the video and draw all sorta lines, in which case it doesn’t become clear and obvious. It’s frustrating to watch.
Regarding fpl, i was gonna start lascelles and bench taylor since i already have pope. But then i saw your team and started taylor, which gave me +5 points so thankful about that 🙂 Finished the gw with 63 points. Not great but not bad either.
Below is my team. I am thinking about rolling the transfer. I am not very sure who to start between Aurier, Lascelles and Connolly. Seems like Connolly is a starter for brighton and playing against norwich, tempting 🙂
Also tempted to do Mane to Sterling after watching that city game. What do you reckon?
Pope (McHarthy)
TAA, Doherty, Taylor, Aurier ( Lascelles)
Mane, KDB, Bruno, Martial (Saka)
Jiminez, Rashford ( Connolly)
Thanks!

Hi! Antonio’s post-match interview was funny, “I really dislike VAR” he said. It wasn’t the case in that decision, but stopping the video just one frame later could mean a huge difference when players are at full pace. I’ll never forget Lundstram’s big toe being offside in the buildup to a goal that was disallowed by VAR. The best is when they draw the lines by hand!
Glad it worked with double Burnley at the back. 🙂 Taylor was on for 3 bonus points near the end of the last two games. Then Pope steals them in added time.
It’s possible Lascelles could miss out. I think he might have had a cut to his ankle? Not sure what the injury is exactly, but hopefully he will be fit as I’m running low on bench cover if key starters are rested.
I would set the team the same way you did. I’ve already changed the bench order a few times from Connolly to Lascelles. Currently on Lascelles first as I feel this type of injury (assuming it’s a cut) could mean he either starts or is left out completely, not risked.
But it’s not straightforward. Connolly has looked sharp since the restart. Small chance he could be rested after starting consecutive games.
Mane to Sterling is a tough one. I struggled in swapping Mane for De Bruyne. Sterling could be even tougher to justify. One key reason for the switch with my team was to bring in KDB for the long-term along with Pulisic before the price changes. Had I waited, I wouldn’t be able to have this combo. But I was happy to try out Mane at least one more round. Your call on this one, both have great fixtures and similar scoring potential.
Thanks for the comment.

Ola Bruno,
I am around around 50 points behind my ML leader and want to start taking risks to catch up. I am thinking about below moves. What do you think,
1) Mane and Saka —> Sterling and Foden
2) Mane and sake —> Mahrez and Pulisic
I will be left with only TAA for liverpool cover. I know it’s risky but i need to start taking those risks now. Which move would you prefer?
Thanks
Upper 90 Studios

Ola. I like both options as risks to make up ground. 👍
It’s not easy. Maybe the smallest edge to Mahrez Pulisic? I really don’t know. I said that thinking Mahrez had the best chance of starting after being benched GW32.
Assuming they all start, I wouldn’t be able to pick easily. It’s one of those decisions that can swing in different directions depending on who starts. Since it’s impossible to predict what Guardiola will do, I will have to say I don’t know. Sorry!

Hi Bruno
GW 32+ was worst of all season , i was 13 points short from Average points. I was leading few of my leagues but GW 32+ was all RED RED RED . Now i’ve my Wildcard active and hoping to cover up the points and get in the lead again.
I’m thinking to use the BB in gw 34+.
Here is my team
Gk Pope/ Martinez
Deff Aruire/ Doherty/Wan-B/ Saiss/Holgate
Mid Foden/KDB/Salah/Willian/Bruno
Fwd Jimenez/ Kane/ Greenwood
I’ve 1845 points and current overall rank around 240k
Any Thing you wanna suggest?

Hi. It was a strange week with blanks for key players. I’ve seen low scores for many strong FPL managers this week, so you’re not alone.
Not sure I can improve it. This weekend could be a tricky one with rotation, so BB could work well GW34. This mini-season is all new territory with unknowns. Hard to predict what the managers will do.
It’s an excellent team. I might suggest an alternate draft to compare with yours, but keep yours as it is strong. The optional draft could be Son as the Spurs attacker, only if it allows Ings in place of Kane. Not sure if the funds would allow this anyway, and it’s not required as Kane seems to be back to scoring. Plus Foden is rising quickly.

Hi Bruno,
I’m ranked 223k. Doing well this season, except for not nailing 90% of captain choices.
Playing
DK Pope / martinez
Def Van Dijk, Doherty, Fernandez / Holgate, Masina
Mid Bruno, Son, KDB, Willian / Saka
For Rashford, Jime, Vardy
KDB might be benched coming game. And yes, I have no liverpool attackers since the restart, hope they don’t punish me against villa. I am still waiting for Vardy to wake up from his sleep, only reason why i kept him coz i had him from the start at 9mil. This gw, i sold Traore (feddup of him getting benched) and injured matt richie, in Holgate and Willian (over pulisic), I am surprised willian is going under the radar compared to pulisic.
Team looks good on papers, only thing WHO to captain? Big teams are expected to score (Man Utd, Chelsea, even Spurs), pretty sure if i stick with bruno, rasford gonna explode

Liking the transfers. Willian has been strong and he’s on free kicks and penalties.

Good luck. 👍

Thanks bruno, i followed you and sticked with Bruno, no regrets, one of the few times captain choices worked out well. Happy with Vardy’s double, hope Leicester improve from this game and take on Arsenal next. Looks like i will be holding on with Vardy for now. Rashford doesnt look convincing regardless of the goal (penalty), if greenwood is guaranteed a start surely will replace Rashford and open up money for my midfield

I hope you are well. I hope the venting helped🙂. I played Traore and benched KDB against Liverpool, so know how you feel🙃. Anyway small green arrows and moving on….
I totally agree with you on VAR. I think with the Moura incident it was also the changed rules to blame.
Im making one possible final change to my team:
1.Son to Salah- you think its worth it for a hit, given Mo is chasing 3rd successive Golden Boot(only Henry and Shearer achieved this) as he joked recently in an interview.
2.Enough motivation….to also captain him against Villa?
Mo averages over 10 points against bottom 6 opposition this season and Klopp will be demanding improvement after the Man City beating….
3.Other option is Bruno captain….
4. Alternatively I keep Son( Bournemouth next), but not sure Spurs are firing to do good against Everton defence. Could replace Ings with Jesus, but he is also hot and cold and…..Pep roulette.
Your views?
Ps: Your deck idea sounds awesome, you should share some photos when it is done.

Hi. Doing well, thanks. That Moura decision kind of threw me over the edge I guess haha.
1. Would rate them about the same as far as scoring potential. I believe Son has 3 goals and 3 assists in 3 games against Everton.
2. I have the vice captaincy on Mo because of his consistency. Can see Liverpool rebounding against Villa.
3. This is who I have it on at the moment. United player against Bournemouth.
4. It’s such a tough decision. We know how much of a difference one premium player can make because of their points ceilings.
Prefer Ings over Jesus at this moment, although Ings has a tricky one this round.
I’m completely stuck on the final decision between the two because I believe they can both do well. Not an easy one!
Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind with the deck. 👍
