Fantasy Strategy.
Repetition of certain behaviors robs us of new experiences and keeps us down. This season I’ve been experimenting with swapping premium players for short-term gains. Who’s your top captain pick GW13?
GW12 Review.
GW12 points: 51PTS (AVG 51). Upper 90 Studios dropped around 50k places in the Overall Rank which I can accept considering the aftermath! ๐
- I nearly brought in Mane for a hit and captained him instead of Salah.
- I had none of the top-scoring players Martinez (11PTS), Justin (11PTS) or Vardy (13PTS).
Plan A vs. Plan B.
It all came down to two transfer plans last week. Plan A was to do nothing and bank the free transfer. This kept De Bruyne against United, Salah captain.
Plan B was to sell KDB for Mane captain in a short-term gamble. The problem was it required a -4 hit to sell KDB only to bring him right back the following week for West Brom. Mane ended up blanking against Fulham, Salah scored a penalty (16PTS, captain).
Check out the points swing.
Plan A: Salah (c) 16 + KDB 3 = 19
Plan B: Mane (c) 4 + Salah 8 = 12 -4 = 8
Plan B required an additional transfer, Jamal Lewis (1PT) in place of Lamptey who didn’t play. Lewis was subbed after conceding and being booked. He’s now on four yellow cards for the season, one away from a ban. Matt Ritchie played the full game on the left wing which affected Lewis’s scoring potential and could increase the risk of rotation as we head into the busy fixture period. Even after adding the point for Lewis, Plan A still scored 10 points higher… with KDB set for GW13 and 2FTs.
The Results.
Edouard Mendy (3PTS). As mentioned on the previous video, I was taken back by how Mendy slid into Bamford. He risked being sent off as the last man! This time he barged into Calvert-Lewin conceding an early penalty. The resulting goal turned out to be the match winner for Everton.
Mo Salah (16PTS, captain). A quiet individual and team performance. Salah had just one chance in the first half with a quick turn and shot in the box. His only other contribution was to score the penalty. Fulham were denied their own penalty and nearly came away with all three points.
Kevin De Bruyne (3PTS). Strange tactics from Guardiola in the worst game of the season. KDB looked sharp whenever he had the ball, but those moments didn’t come often as he was too high up the pitch, disconnected from the rest of the team. Despite his weird new role, KDB had two excellent chances to score and faces West Brom at home next.
Calvert-Lewin (5PTS). Fantastic team performance and crucial three points against Chelsea. Calvert-Lewin was actually brought down in the box for a penalty twice! Luckily for Chilwell, the second was overturned by VAR for offside in the buildup. DCL faces Leicester next who will be without influential central defender Jonny Evans through suspension.
Kane (9PTS) and Son (5PTS). Kane was fortunate that his shot from distance was misjudged by Guaita, but he nearly added a second in the first half with a header from a Son corner. He was also denied by a brilliant Guaita save late in the game. Liverpool next, is it time to sell Son and Kane?
GW13 Top Cheats.
Bruno Fernandes (3PTS). Premium player roulette! A short-term gamble on Fernandes GW9-GW10 produced two goals, an assist and 21 points. Since I sold him GW11-GW12, just one assist. โ The truth is Fernandes changed the game against the Hammers and he was the most dangerous man on the pitch in the Manchester Derby. Next up, Sheffield United who are rock bottom with one point from twelve games. GW13 captain?
James Justin (11PTS) and Jamie Vardy (13PTS) were outstanding against Brighton. Justin had endless energy on the right always looking for a cross into the box. Vardy showed his predatory instinct with a goal and two assists to Maddison.
Che Adams (8PTS) and Danny Ings (5PTS). Commanding 3-0 win against Sheffield United. Adams and Ings are on my Watchlist, but I may wait until after GW14 when they face an improved Manchester City defense. That’s if I drop any of my current forwards! They’re all excellent. ๐
Sadio Mane (2PTS). I can’t remember a single chance against Fulham which is a testament to their improvement in all areas of the pitch. The best defense is a good offense. When teams attack effectively, opponents second guess whether to venture high up the pitch and take risks.
Antonee Robinson (2PTS) and Ivan Cavaleiro (2PTS). Robinson was the best fullback/wingback on the pitch. To be fair, Alexander-Arnold is still regaining full fitness after injury… no excuses for Robertson! ๐ Cavaleiro was brought down in the box for a penalty which wasn’t given. His composure in the decisive moments will be put to the test against a shaky Brighton defense GW13.
GW13 Transfers
Transfers: 2
Transfers OUT: Mendy, Salah โ
Transfers IN: Martinez, Fernandes (c) โ
*Two free transfers used and I’m considering an additional move to drop Lamptey for a hit. (EDIT: Leaning toward holding Lamptey as the next two fixtures are favorable)
Mendy to Martinez.
Edouard Mendy (3PTS). To continue using Mendy as a differential, he must have equal or greater points potential than highly-owned goalkeepers in the #Elite64 league (stats below).
Emi Martinez (11PTS). When his defenders force low-percentage shots from distance, Martinez’s calm presence can result in double digit hauls. Fixtures also factored in this move. Villa’s next three opponents are Burnley, West Brom and Crystal Palace.
โฝ๏ธ Emi Martinez is selected by more than half the managers in the #Elite64. (26% overall)
Salah to Fernandes.
Mo Salah (8PTS). Tottenham are difficult to break down and offer a threat on the counter under Mourinho, which means Klopp has to find the right balance. Liverpool are dealing with injuries in key positions… I’m taking a chance on a new premium attacker GW13-GW14.
Bruno Fernandes (3PTS). Sheffield United looked dejected against Southampton, lacking desire at both ends of the pitch. Assuming Anthony Martial is fit, he combines well with Fernandes and takes pressure off Rashford as the central striker. But the key could be Pogba. His presence allows Fernandes to play a free role and create chances.
Captain.
Bruno Fernandes is currently set as captain in the last match of GW13, Son vice captain. It would normally be easy to captain or vice-captain De Bruyne against West Brom, but I’m drawn by Son against Liverpool. Son’s pace with Kane’s vision is the perfect matchup against a high defensive line struggling with injuries to van Dijk, Matip and Joe Gomez.

Hi Bruno!
Greetings from Singapore!
Loved your insights and great tips Bro.. Iโve been folllowing you into my 2nd season already.
Need your advise for GW13.
My current playing squad (3-5-2):
Martinez
Chilwell / Dier / James
Salah / KDB / Son / Grealish / Bruno
Wilson / Bamford
Bench: Steer / Balbeuna / Taylor / Brewster
In bank: 0.0
Seems to be a strong squad however Iโm struggling in my own mini league with my peers.. Iโve never been lucky picking the right captain every week.
Please advise on my squad and tips for Captain alright buddy..
(Planning to Capt Bruno and VC gg to Grealish)
Wishing you high points this coming GW! ๐๐ป

Hi! Glad to have you and I appreciate your support ๐ธ๐ฌ
This has been a strange season. We could have similar teams, then 1-2 players or the captain choice can make the difference between green or red arrows. It used to be that we could rely on the team core to deliver a solid baseline score. Now it’s more unpredictable.
I agree with you, it’s a strong squad. Keep plugging away at it, trusting that you are always doing your best.
We have similar players, but I can only speak for my own team and plan. I brought in Fernandes and he’s currently set as my captain against Sheffield United in the last game of the week. I watched Sheffield United and West Brom closely this past week in anticipation for the captain selection.
Both teams are struggling this season, but West Brom at least put up a fight. Sheffield United looked dejected, lacking determination at both ends of the pitch. For this reason, and the smallest chance of KDB being rested or coming off the bench, I’m leaning toward Bruno captain.
My vice captain is currently Son targeting Liverpool’s high defensive line. Trust your instinct as Grealish is also a strong vice option.
The only other note would be to keep a close eye on Wilson. Not sure if the previous performance was affected by the COVID outbreak. Keep an eye on Che Adams, although fixtures are a little tricky, so you could make out by keeping Wilson.
Those are some thoughts for now. Good luck!

Hi. Thanks. Team is well set for GW13, not easy to improve it.
Put some pressure on Ayling to deliver, but he is ok for now. Hopefully Lamptey is fine for Fulham and Sheffield United.
I don’t see obvious priorities… there’s the case of KDB vs. Mahrez, but it’s hard to predict which premium will deliver from game to game.
One idea so one of the 2FTs isn’t wasted is to swap Branthwaite for Douglas 3.8m and bag the extra 0.1m. That’s the only suggestion I can make at this moment, but you may have other options you could be considering yourself. Up to you. ๐

Hi bruno, do you think de bruyne will play ?
i am thinking about captain De bruyne or Bruno also i have foden and jesus.

15/12/20
Hi. Impossible to predict Pep. He has a deeper bench to work with and opportunity to rest players. It factored a bit into my captain decision, but not much! KDB is a top captain pick. ๐
Even though it’s a small risk, I’m aiming to reduce it by going Fernandes (c) and Son (vc).
As far as points potential GW13, I might rate KDB and Fernandes equal.

Hi Bruno,
Im sitting with the current squad: (* = current team selected)
GK *Martinez; McCarthy
DEF: *Robertson; *Chilwell; *Cancelo; *Dallas; KWP
MID: *Salah(vc); *Fernandes(c); *Son; *Soucek; Bissouma
FWD: *Kane; *Bamford; Brewster
i have just used a transfer this week to bring in Fernandes for Havertz who has seriously underwhelmed.
my question is this…
1] im concerned about Cancelo’s play time and suspect he wont start
2] R.James is currently looking very impressive
3] what do i do with Robbo?
4]i have no KDB in my team…
i now have the option of moving (Robbo – Dias); (Chilwell – James) and (Son – KDB) for a -8 hit.
should i be seeing this as a viable option or is selling Son too risky at this point – even if it is to bring is KDB (and a triple Up on City)
my current squad value is 101.7 Mill with 0.5 Mill in the Bank.
Current OR: 97.108
Points: 63 (GW12) 764 OR

Hi. Congrats on a top OR and I’m liking the transfer. ๐
1. I don’t even try to predict Pep’s lineups anymore and it’s much healthier mentally. It wouldn’t surprise me if he plays Ederson in the outfield one day.
2. Yes, super unlucky not to return big points GW12. He and Justin were on fire on the right side.
3. Not easy because your team has a good balance. His ceiling is high with attack potential.
4. I can also understand a move for KDB with his fixtures. No easy way top bring him in without significant hits or a premium player swap which is up to you. Anything can happen so trust your instinct.
I can speak for my strategy. By swapping out a premium player for Fernandes, I can afford Reece James for Lamptey. The concern is Lampard has options with Azpilicueta and we’re heading into a busy period… I would be surprised if James played every game with the shifts he’s been putting in. For this reason, I’m leaning toward holding off on the additional transfer at the back for my team.
You may find different improvements in your squad weighing all the factors like fixtures and rotation.
I’m afraid to point you in a set direction because we may see big points swings as managers rotate this month. I’m making calculated guesses to the best of my ability, but accept that some things are out of my control.
Those are some thoughts, not an easy one!

Hi Bruno love the way you plan your strategies always good to see people following their gut and not following the masses. Check out my squad below and let me know what you think. Looking to bring some defenders for GW14.
(3-4-3):
McCarthy
Vestergaard / Dallas / Justin
Rashford / KDB / Fernandes / Grealish
DCL / Jesus / Bamford
Bench: Bissouma / Dunne / Phillips / Button
Bank: 2.3

Hi. Thank you. ๐ There are excellent FPL accounts providing top info, but it’s more fun when I make decisions after watching games.
Your team has excellent scoring potential this round. Future alternatives… Keep an eye on Antonee Robinson and Charlie Taylor, both could provide value at 4.4m. There’s always a concern with rotation for the fullbacks during the busy fixtures, so I also have a few nailed centerbacks on my watchlist. Konsa could be an option if you don’t have Martinez.
The additional funds may come into play if Kane or Son become harder to leave out, but no changes required at this moment.
Thanks for the comment. -Bruno

Olรก Bruno
This GW was good to me, I own Martinez and Vardy , Justin was first bench though :/
66 and up ๐ผ
I think I’m not going to transfer Vardy out !
Instead I’m thinking Robbo -> Maguire
Maguire for the Next 2 games only ( Sheffield ( no threat ) and Leeds ( conceed a lot from set piece )
But on the other side I don’t know it it is a good idea to get rid of Robbo . I also have Cancelo .
Upper 90 Studios
15/12/20
Olรก. Congrats on a strong score with Martinez and Vardy, plus Justin. ๐
Nearly impossible to drop Vardy when he’s scoring and Leicester are playing well.
I like the idea with a United defender. I wanted to look at them as options and ran out of time. Your reasoning makes sense, Sheffield United had zero shots on target GW12 and didn’t look bothered to attack (or defend really).
Never easy to drop premium players because of the points ceiling, so it’s up to you!

Hi Bruno
Since lanquishing at 3.5M back in GW4 slowly but slowly starting to make progress since using WC in GW9 l now stand at 1.3M OR, 63pts GW12.
Below is my team – 1FT / ยฃ0.3ITB
Martinez
Cancelo / Chilwell / PVA
KDB / Salah / Fernandes / Grealish / Soucek
Bamford / DCL
Bench – Foster / Adams / Coufal / Mengi
l was thinking of rolling the transfer, but l might go a similar route to you and take a gamble moving Salah out for Sterling as l hope Mourinho will “park the bus”…….l really hope so!!
Liverpool really struggled against a spirited Fulham with Salah just scoring the pen and Spurs really had to defend well against Palace.
l could be leaving myself open to Pep roulette and KDB / Cancelo may not start, though the former is so pivitol to how City play and l have Che Adams as first sub should he be needed. But l need something different to push me up the rankings and maybe Sterling is the answer he has to hit some form soon.
Captain choice is a difficult one this week with Fernandes and KDB leading the polls, l can understand why you are going for Fernandes, Sheffield looked a beaten side and his away form is amazing, but l may hedge my bet to KDB.
All the best and good luck.

Hi Malc. Nice comeback, nearly out of the millionaires club. It’s possible to make big leaps in the OR with small gaps in the ranks.
We have a similar assessment of Liverpool and Spurs. Anything can happen, we’ll have to see how the managers approach this one.
Pep roulette played the smallest role in my captain decision, but not much because KDB is a top pick. I agree with you, even against the weaker sides, when KDB is out it changes the structure and they can struggle to break teams down.
Your bench is strong, jealous. Captain is set as well. Good luck!

Hey Bruno,

Would you play Soucek over Dallas?
Cheers.

Hey. That’s so close. Dallas has a high ceiling with clean sheet and attack potential, no issue taking a chance on him this round. Soucek is so good in the air…
It’s possible they can both deliver returns.

Cheers for the reply. In the end, it didn’t matter. Mahrez didn’t start and I got Dallas coming off the bench for 7pts. I had Dias, KDB(C), Zouma… 44 points with only Fernandes to play. WHELP.
Looks like your decision not to captain KDB despite popular opinion may pay off for you. Good luck!
Would you be doing any in depth review of the DGWs? I have made a list of players I am slowly going to transfer in for GW19 so that I can BB. Probably gonna FH in GW18.
Want to keep Mahrez for another week or 2 before getting Son in due more favourable fixtures, but I have weak cover in Dallas and Soucek. Have 2 FT, looking to upgrade Douglas to a WHU def but they have Chelsea this week. Leeds have UTD and SOU have MCI. Can’t seem to find a way and I don’t want to waste a FT. I might be able to spend a transfer just to upgrade Forster to Ryan as a cover for Mccarthy but it’s Messilier I want for GW 19 for BB.
This is pretty hard, can’t have everyone and something has gotta give =/
Would you just swap Mahrez for Son given my bench options? He seems to score regardless of opposition.
Upper 90 Studios
17/12/20
That’s great with Dallas coming in off the bench. It’s a low scoring Gameweek this week, so any score near the average is ok.
Yes, I’ll hopefully cover the DGWs although I’m a little behind for this week with the quick deadlines…
Dallas and Soucek are decent cover. Many strong managers use both as starters. ๐
For the long-run, I would prefer Son over Mahrez as Mourinho is less likely to chop and change. Pep has more bench options to rotate.

Oh Ryan didn’t play. Guess that option is out of the window. How locked down is Sanchez?

Hard to tell if Ryan is only out for one game, or longer, so there is some risk moving for Sanchez. ๐ค

Hey Bruno! Made me happy to see you at least share your notes, appreciate that!
I have Maddison which was good last gw but I want to transfer him out against Mount or Ferran Torres, but if I do that I Will take a -4 hit. What do you think I should do, and if so who?
Upper 90 Studios
15/12/20
Hey! No problem. ๐ That’s a difficult decision. I can only add some thoughts, up to you if you’re feeling the change.
Maddison and Leicester are playing well, although they will be pushed with busy fixtures ahead. I might rate them all similarly, maybe a slight edge to Maddison? Having an in-form Vardy as a target is another factor.
Your call on this one! -Bruno
