It’s time to face the music, America: Soccer is taking over. I’m sitting in the press box at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, and I’m staring at a sold-out venue.
The majority of the fans are wearing red today, and the cheers are not being directed at the team this place calls home.
No.
Today, they are mostly cheering for Liverpool Football Club.
The same was true just a few days ago at historic Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The International Champions Cup is in full swing here in the States, and Americans are taking to it like fish to water.
I can’t say I’m amazed, or even surprised, though. It was just a matter of time until this great country embraced the world’s greatest sport. Children and grown men kicking the ball around in the parking garage, and right in front of one of the most iconic, most American of sporting venues – what a sight to see! I for one, cannot wait until the US once again hosts the World Cup – one can argue only greed and corruption kept us from being awarded the honor in 2018 or 2022 – until then, we’ll have to be content with hosting the next Copa America.
We will have our chance soon enough. And then, there will be no stopping us.
This is the new American pastime.
This is soccer.
