FPL GW1 Team Tips - Top Secret DifferentialsFinal GW1 team revealed! Where to invest funds, top secret differentials and Liverpool fixture warning! Plus green lights red flags, and our top FPL tips for GW1.

Welcome back!

Hope you had a great summer! Last year we had fish and chips in a London pub. This summer, we covered Barcelona vs. Manchester United and spent time with family to recharge the batteries. 🙂

Where to begin.

FPL Top Secret Tips

With Gameweek 1 deadline just days away, now is the time to tackle important decisions that could shape the outcome of your FPL season. Answer the most difficult questions first. Where will you invest the majority of your budget? Is your defense strong enough? What Fantasy strategies are you willing to test this season? Let’s dive in and solve the hardest problems first.

⚽️ Set your first draft team by instinct.

Why am I stuck?

You start by setting your team, and it fills itself quickly. Suddenly, you can’t decide on the third striker spot. No matter how hard you try, nothing feels right! 😡

When this happens, sometimes the answer is to not force the decision at all. Maybe the question was wrong in the first place. By approaching the problem in a different way, you may notice that the formation that matches your preferred style is a 3-5-2 instead of 3-4-3. Or maybe it’s a 4-4-2?

Instead of a £7m striker, you scout a bargain and drop him to the bench. This now frees up funds to upgrade your weakest defender – something you hadn’t even considered had you not been stuck!

⚽️ Look for out-of-the-box solutions to the toughest problems.

Where to invest funds.

First, you select a team core with strength in all positions. If you’re curious about the step-by-step process, check out our video guide. 🎥 OVER 10,000 VIEWS! Thank you! 👊

Next, you round things off with differentials and bench cover.

Normally, our start-of-season strategy is to invest more in the attack since midfielders and forwards tend to outscore goalkeepers and defenders.

A quick look at the Statistics tab on https://fantasy.premierleague.com for last season shows that ZERO goalkeepers and defenders managed to make it into the top 10 highest scoring players.

Top 10 Highest Scorers in FPL

This season that could change, so it’s important to be ready to adapt!

Keep in mind that everyone has a different style in Fantasy. Heading into the season with too many £4.0m defenders may not feel right for you. Instead, give your squad better balance and bench depth.

We’re proud of our Overall Rank record over the years, but we make mistakes like everyone else. 👍

⚽️ There is no right or wrong strategy, trust your instinct.

Top Secret Differentials.

Now that your team is covered with key big-hitters, it’s time to unearth the low-ownership gems. 😉

Davy Klaassen.

Great name! At the time of this writing, Klaassen was the 31st most popular midfielder £7.5m and under. Priced higher than Willian, how has he gone unnoticed?

Klaassen is the young attacking midfielder who captained that exciting Ajax side for the past two seasons. Despite losing Romelu Lukaku, Koeman is determined to build on last season with key additions such as Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane and of course, Wayne Rooney.

We’ve been watching him closely throughout the pre-season and like what we see. Klaassen is:

  • Influential on the ball
  • Makes runs into the penalty area
  • Scores goals and assists

The concerns are Everton’s fixtures, and there could be an adjustment period as he settles into a new team and league.

Selected by just 2.4% of all teams, Klaassen is a top differential for 2017-18.

The list of players ahead of Klaassen in ownership % include the injured Lallana and Ramsey! 🤔

Luka Milivojevic.

Designated set piece and penalty taker. Crystal Palace are an attacking side loaded with players capable of drawing fouls in dangerous areas. Will Milivojevic step in to clean things up?

Selected by a criminally low 2.1% of all teams, Mili is one of the most affordable differentials in FPL this season. And he doesn’t even make the £5.0m top-10 most popular list!

⚽️ When popular players struggle, owning the right differentials will set your team apart.

Liverpool Fixture Warning.

Liverpool Fixtures Champions League GW1 FPL

Needing to qualify for the Champions League group stage, Liverpool face a hectic start of the season that could impact their stars’ points potential in FPL.

Our First Draft team explained the importance of Liverpool cover in attack as they tend to start the season hot. Players such as Coutinho, Mané, Firmino and Salah could hit the ground running, but we now have an added risk of rotation and even injury with five games every 3-4 days beginning on GW1.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t invest in Liverpool cover! It’s another factor to consider when deciding between your options. ⚠️

*UPDATE Aug 8: Liverpool have reached an agreement with Barcelona to sell Coutinho.

Change on Yoshida with the news that he was subbed in his last game as a precaution (thigh). Also, the Virgil van Dijk situation is unresolved, he is due back in training. With VVD in the mix, Yoshida and Stephens are not nailed on.

• Less funds in this 3-5-2 forced a change in the 5th midfielder spot
• Huge risk with no bench cover!
• £0.5m ITB is a bonus that allows more flexibility GW2

Here we go! Good luck everyone! 🙂

Green Lights red flags.

Green Light: Christian Eriksen. Capable of scoring and creating dangerous chances, Eriksen is one of the first names on our team sheet. With 8 goals and 20 assists last season, Eriksen has the potential to put up even bigger numbers this year. Or is he off to Barcelona? 😅

Green Light: Marcos Alonso. A midfielder in defender’s clothing? His forward runs down the left flank and contribution in attack are a perfect fit for Conte’s system.

Red Flag: Leighton Baines. Everton welcome Stoke on opening day. Then things turn for the worse with three away games in their next four. Everton’s first five fixtures:

Red Flag: Danny Simpson. At just £4.5m, Danny Simpson provides a good value defensive option. However, a closer look into our fixture Difficulty Cheat Sheet raises some concerns.

Fantasy Premier League strategy.

For the past 10 years, our team has finished in the top 1-2% of all players. 2014-15 was our best finish everOverall rank 13,126, top 0.4%. Our strategy is risky. We start slow and build team value by making 1-3 transfers each week. We save on goalkeepers and defenders and load up with expensive midfielders and forwards. By January, we can stack the full team with the most valuable players and come from behind to pull into the top 1-2% of all managers. See our previous finishes HERE.
